how do i know if my daughter is head down or breech????

I haven't had an ultrasound since 22 weeks and I'm worried that my baby girl is still in the transverse position.... I'm currently 31w+1d and I think she's head down but I'm getting a feeling that she may not be....what are the chances my doctor will do another ultrasound????? Due 12-15-15....please help!

  • I've also heard that the baby will move and shift positions up until the late 30 weeks. My midwives don't start to discuss breech being a concern until 36-37 weeks.
  • My baby is still transverse but they're not worried because he'll move around alot. It's only when you're around 36 weeks they'll talk options.
    But don't worry about it

My OB palpates my abdomen to feel LO's head. She's been doing this since 28 weeks (am now 32 weeks). You could always call your OB's office and ask them when they start checking if you are really concerned.

  • My doctor spins babies at 35-36 weeks if they aren't head down. At that point 50% of spun babies stay. My baby has been head down at every exam which they just seem to know from when they do Doppler and measurements.
  • On the Spinning Babies website you can find the mapping tool (it's a diagram of the areas where your baby can kick and what position he or she might be in based on those kicks or bulges).
  • You don't need an ultrasound to know if the baby is breech or head down. If you're nearly 32 weeks then i imagine you now have appts every 2 weeks? When your doctor checks your belly and heart rate, they can tell the baby's position by 1) your belly and b) from where they pick up the heartbeat. If you're concerned, just ask your doctor at your next appt. But at this point babies can still flip.
  • Yes, your doctor will tell you my feeling around or could check by u/s. Where are you feeling hiccups and kicks etc? If you're feeling hiccups down low in your pelvis baby is most likely head down
  • Mine has been head down for a few weeks now, I know this because I feel her hiccups vibrating in my vagina. But I echo pps, they can feel position just by palpating your belly.
  • Try belly mapping. It's an awesome website that helps you figure out what position baby is in by mapping where you feel kicks/jabs/ what you can feel by pressing on your belly. Your doc or midwife should be able to tell just by feeling but I'd you don't want to wait until your next appt!
  • My baby is breech and I feel hicups down low so don't go by that! I am 33 weeks and I know she still is
..she kicks my bladder hard all the time. My Dr isn't too concerned I have a growth scan and position check at 35 weeks. Today we discussed per my questions what we would do if she remains transverse or breech. I feel very confident that I am in good hands. Just talk to your doctor if your concerned. I knew right away she was breech and had been for quite some time even with out an ultrasound to prove it.
  • My daughter is breech at 32 weeks and my first two were never breech by this point. I knew she was breech before they told me because she kicks me in the ass!!! She kicks my vagina and my ass and has hiccups in my ribs though I also have felt the hiccups lower so that's not an excellent indication. My doctor isn't worried though. He says 96% of babies will flip and be head down by 35/36 weeks.
  • If you feel the kicks up in your ribs and sides, then your baby is most likely head down. But they spin, move, and rotate a hundred times before you give birth so don't panic!! II also ask my midwife at each appointment what position she believes DD is in :)
  • Doctors are trained to tell position by palpating your abdomen. They have done this for years, before ultrasounds were so routine

My doctor hasn't palpated my abdomen at any of my visits. I asked him at appointment this week why he doesn't feel on my stomach. He didn't react like I was expecting (Why do you want me to feel your stomach? Uhhh, everyone else on the planet does but not you?!?). He said the Leupold technique is outdated and not practiced anymore. He did feel on my stomach just to appease me and confirmed that baby boy is head down, way down.

  • I went to get a 3D to see my princess and she's already head down im 34weeks my ob hasn't done an ultra sound either last time he did was also at 22 weeks.
  • @gardenmama116 They didn't palpate my stomach, literally just doppler and measurement and they knew, which I thought was interesting (I've had my stomach palpated for other things). The midwife actually didn't even really look for the heartbeat last appointment she pretty much put the doppler in the right place I don't know if she got lucky or if she somehow knew where it was just looking at my stomach.
  • My baby likes being transverse-ish every now and then, but the midwife said it wasn't really something they would do anything about until 35 weeks. Last appointment she was head down.
I would also advise some breathing and calming techniques. And remember that giving birth is natural, let your body do it's thing and deal with any issues if your doctor or midwife brings them up.

My midwife has a feel of my belly every appointment. And she gets me to do the same and points out what she is feeling and how she can tell his position. I still have no idea when I do it myself.

Bubs will move around till 36-37 weeks so I wouldn't be too worried. In my last appointment he moved from transverse to breach and then head down. He was having a grand old time moving around.

At our last group session we went through the belly mapping that another PP spoke about - if you feel of see a bump here, and feel kicks here, then this is how he/she is positioned.
  • I saw a doula/perinatal massage therapist this weekend who felt around and said baby was head down and facing my spine (occipital anterior), which is what I suspected based on super low hiccups and feeling what I thought was her bum right above my belly button. Baby's big movements and kicks are usually around my belly button/ribcage. I know she has flipped back and forth a couple times just based on how things feel, but she tends to settle back into her current head-down position.
I'm doing daily inversions and birth ball exercises per spinningbabies.
