Nursing while pregnant. OBGYN says I need to wean now.

My OBGYN told me that as soon as I get pregnant I need to stop nursing my son. He is 2 so its not like he "needs" to nurse still. He only nurses once a day(some days not at all), at most maybe twice if he's sick or gets hurt. I don't feel he's ready to be done yet though.  Anyone else still nursing? What has your doctor suggested? What are your plans? Any suggestions?

  • I'm still nursing, and plan to for at least another 2 months provided my supply doesn't dry up. Unless there's a medical reason to stop, I know nursing can cause contractions so if you're at risk for m/c I can understand her wanting you to stop, I don't see why it's an issue. That being said, I'm not a doctor and more importantly I'm not your doctor. Have you asked her why she wants you to stop?

  • My doctors says that nursing takes nutrients from the growing fetus. I have had issues in past with pre term labor but she didn't make any comments about this but perhaps that was part of it and she just didn't say it.
  • Hmmm I don't know enough about it to say one way or the other. Again I feel like the only person who can tell you 100% that it's safe to continue is your doctor. I can't imagine that once a day is going to make all that much difference, especially if you're taking your prenatals and eating a well balanced diet

  • I have known a lot of women that nurse through their pregnancy and continue to tandem nurse. I know others who's supply dries up and forces the weaning process. I would probably go back to your doctor and ask why they feel that way. If you are eating enough healthy and nourishing foods to support it and not high risk not sure what the problem would be. Just be sure you are upping your calories even more. Plus it's not like you are nursing 8 times a day.

  • I nursed until I was 16 weeks with my second. I have a friend who just delivered and is musing her 18 month old as well as the newborn.
  • Thanks everyone for your responses. Ill look into another obgyn! =)
  • My OBGYN's office is telling me the same thing. I've only met with the prenatal nurse so far, but she said my dr is encouraging me to wean. I want to wait until I actually meet with my OBGYN (in 2 weeks) and see what exactly she says and why she would want me to wean DS. If there is no medical reason or risk to my pregnancy, I plan to continue. It's a bummer because I really like everything else about this dr and the office and I really don't want to switch providers :-/
  • Im in the same boat as you. If its safe while pregnant (from what I have read and been told its perfectly safe) than I would like to let my son continue to nurse till he is ready to be done. Ill try to get a second opinion,

I'm planning on nursing my dude until 18 months, at the start of January. I kind of hope/figure he'll be able to adjust to new baby taking his mama milk more easily if he's not actually nursing anymore.

  • I'm currently nursing.  I haven't called my midwife yet to schedule my first appointment, but I know she's 100% supportive of breastfeeding during pregnancy unless there is an actual medical reason why it would not be safe to continue.  I also nursed my first child during my pregnancy with my second child and tandem nursed them both afterwards.

I nursed thru my last pregnancy (my milk dried up at 9w and my toddler continued to dry nurse for comfort). When my baby was born we continued to tandem. That same toddler and baby were still tandem nursing when I got pregnant this time. I weaned the 4yo about 3 weeks ago, but I'm still nursing my 19mo. I'm 18w now and my milk dried up this time at 16w. I plan on tandeming again. Your OB is incorrect. Maybe if you were not nursing the entire time you were pregnant and suddenly started at the very end, then maybe that could cause preterm labor? But not if you're nursing thru your pregnancy. My OB's wife just had their 5th child. She nursed the 4th thru the pregnancy and now they are tandeming too. I hardly think he'd let her do that if it were abnormal or concerning.
Also, last time tandeming really helped my nursling adjust with the change of the new baby, and now they have an amazing bond.
Good luck with whatever you decide is best for you and your family with nursing/weaning, and congrats on your pregnancy! :)

  • Honestly I'm so chunky that no one is starving if I still nurse my 18 month old. I will be weaning gently over the next six months though because I really don't want to tandem nurse.
  • I am nursing my LO (15 months) as long as i can. There is no data that supports breastfeeding has any impact on a pregnancy. Just eat extra extra calories and drink lots and lots of water. Plenty of women nurse through their pregnancy and tandem nurse.
