Name Feedback Wanted: Boy

I want some name feedback - love or hate.

We're having a really hard time with boy names. A name I had loved for years which I am now unsure about. I really want something unique but isn't too trendy, or trying too hard. I want a substitute teacher to know how to say it and a barista to know how to spell it.

I loved Uriah - but the closer we get to our due date the less confident I am in that name. And what about teasing ... can you just hear kids calling him "urine"

Next I fell in love with Jett - but again the longer is sit on it the more unsure I feel. I have a hard time picturing a 60 year old Jett.

Now we're thinking maybe Chet - and we could nickname him the jet.

So let me have it - Uriah, Jett or Chet what do they make you think of. do you like one significantly more than the rest.

  • Uriah is NMS, but I think it is easy enough to pronounce if you think about it. I don't think I would be able to spell it if someone just told me the name (but I am horrible at spelling).
I like Jett and Chet. Not sure why you would name him Chet if you are planning on going with the nickname of Jet anyway. If that it the case I would just name him Jett.
Also, unless you go with a classic name you are really never going to be able to picture a 60 year old with that name. I am sure in 60 years new parents will be telling us Ethan and Aiden sound like old people names :)

No, I'm saying there is a whole board (not thread) dedicated to baby names that I think you will get more feedback from.
  • What about Josiah?
I do really like Josiah but it was #64 in 2014. I'm trying to get outside the top 100. maybe i just have standards that are too high.

None of these are my style, tbh.  I'll second visiting the name board.

This is your LO, your standards are allowed to be high. If you search a name on nameberry.com it will show you other names that people who like the name you searched like. Maybe try searching some name and see if anything you like more comes up.

I'll wait a day or two and if i don't get a lot of feedback i'll post over there too. Thanks! i didn't even realize that there was a whole board.
  • I like Jett the best. Uriah is good but I did think of urine before I read that you thought of that too.

DH is named Chet. Not Chester just Chet. He HATES being called Chester,
which people tend to think is really funny to call him. And I have never really asked him why but whenever he introduces himself to someone, he spells out his first name "Hi, I'm Chet, C-H-E-T" so I assumed over the years he got used to people not knowing what his name was, even though I think it's pretty straightforward. (oh and calling him Chet the jet... DH is known to his friends as Chetti spaghetti lol)
  • No to all of them.

Uncommon names you could consider :

    Finley nn Finn
    Todd
    Theodore no Theo
    Ruben
  • I don't particularly care for any of them, and all the Chet's I've met have the nickname "Butch"

  • I'm so sorry, I hardly ever give opinions on names as to be honest- it's down to the parents. But you say Uriah- I think urinal.

I've been struggling with boys names too (we are team green) and I checked the top 100 names here in the UK and every single boy name I liked was on there. I say if you like a name who cares if it's on the top 100?! Whatever you pick- may be popular in another few years anyway, you can't predict these things.
  • I had a book as a kid about a monster named Uriah the Heap, so it's a nope for me.

I've never met a Josiah, but I have met two Jetts... Other names that are similar:

    Jeremiah
    Zachariah
    Jonah/Jonas
    Elias
    Jedediah
    Jebediah
    Gideon
    Abel
    Tobias
    Ezekiel
    Ephraim
    Ezra
    Jethro (NN Jet?)

Chet is ok, although I agree that it's usually used as a NN for Chester. What about Charles, NN Chet?
  • I like Josiah just because I loved, loved, loved The West Wing.
  • I'm sorry, but I'm not a fan of any of them. I think people may have a hard time pronouncing Uriah. I agree that Jett seems juvenile and that Chet is more of a nickname.
  • No offense, not a fan of any of them. Try a baby name book, that helped us!
  • Nope, nope, and nope. Sorry just can't get behind any of these. Good thing is there are literally thousands of names out there. I'm sure you'll find something.

  • I had a book as a kid about a monster named Uriah the Heap, so it's a nope for me.

"I’ll say it again: Uriah Heep. It’s satisfying even to type it. Uriah Heep. I don’t know what it is. An Old Testament prophet gone sour? A pile of wee? Either way, it fits. It is the name of a man who will tell you he is the “umblest person going” while scheming to lord it over you. The name of a man you don’t want to touch."

I like the idea of finding a name that you could use Chet as a nickname for, like Chester. (I feel like if you wanted, you could even go with something like Charles and call him Chet, although I'm sure there are people who might feel it's not a classic Charles nickname.) The ladies in the name forum are great about taking a list of names you like and giving you "similar" suggestions.

You might also be interested in this list of mostly off-the-beaten-path names, which I've had a lot of fun browsing: https://appellationmountain.net/boys/

    Good luck!
  • I don't love any of them but if I had to choose, I'd pick Jett. What about Judd? We have a Canadian friend with this name and we considered it.
  • I feel the same way you do about boy names I like it then I don't. I like jett and jett. The first one nms. I like Emory but then I'm having trouble picking my own boy name
  • I like Jett. You can also spell it Jhett. I think your reasoning on not like it is just extra hormones. Trust me I did the same thing with both my LO's. Ultimately he will be your son & whatever you don't mind saying 200 times a day in different ways is the name you should go with. Try yelling the name as if you were mad bc let's face it he will be getting into trouble at some point & you will be yelling it across the house, down the street, inside target! Haha. Happy name picking little lady. Have a blessed weekend.
  • I like Jett the best. Chet us cute but I don't like Chester. Uriah is meh. Too much like urine.
  • Meh.. Jett's my favorite but it still doesn't make my heart sing.

Since it's a mineral name here are my suggestions:

    Micah
    Jasper
    Sterling
    Cornelius (like Cornelian)
    Alister / Alistair (like Alabaster)
    Malachi (like Malachite)

  • I never ever give opinions on names bc it's not my kid so I don't typically care. However, I cannot jive with any of those names. I'm all for finding something rare and uncommon so I get where you're coming from, but I feel like there's so many better options.
  • Not a fan of any either, Uriah makes me think urine to. Chet makes me think of the Santa clause movies. So if I had to chose one it would be Jett

  • I loved the name Uriah too but then I read that it sounds like urine/urea so name was shot down
  • I don't love any but if I had to choose I'm team Jett. Ultimately it's up to you and your SO though. I did go to school with a Jed. That's probably why I like Jett outta the three. Just saying Chet out loud rubs me the wrong way. Just, meh.
  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies. I really appreciate the honest comments.
  • I like Jett the best and can totally picture a 60 y/o with that name, especially with how name popularity changes year to year.
Uriah is ok, I didn't think urine tho, I actually thought of stars (like orions belt) (don't know how to spell that)
Chet is my least fav, don't like it at all. (To old manish)
I'm with you on unique but not crazy, not to trendy names.
At the end of the day it's your kids name and if you like it, use it. Someone will always have an opinion. I have a River Allen and soon a Cole Hudson.
    Happy hunting :)
  • Not a fan of those three. Uriah sounds pretty feminine to me. Maybe because I think of Mariah.

    Sorry.
