Silver nitrate, chemical burn??.. Picture included!

At her 2 week appointment yesterday the doctor put silver nitrate on her belly button because it wasn't dried up but the cord fell off.
It looks really red and irritated. I'll call the doctor in the morning to ask them if it's normal to be red.. But when I googled it, it said could be chemical burn??
Did anyone else have their doctor use this??
I added a picture of her belly, when I wipe it off with a rag it doesn't seem to hurt her.. But it doesn't look good!

  • My baby got this treatment too. The doctor mentioned the skin would look gray or black, but didn't mention red. I'd check with your doctor. Glad it doesn't seem to bother your LO.

  • @LouLouLove Yeah, the red is the scary part :/. Looks like her skin is raw!
  • My first DD got silver nitrate on her belly button too. The doctor applied it and told us to neutralize it with alcohol when we got home. We had no problems. Did they tell you the same?
  • @kanga915 no they just said leave her band aid on 24 hours and that's it
  • My son had a minor umbilical granuloma and had to have silver nitrate. Eventually it mended itself thankfully. But Even that didn't look anything like that. Was he supposed to get the skin? Or just the inner part with the cord?
  • @mel0601 it was suppose to be just inside her belly button. But it looks like it's all over!
  • I would call the dr. We had it done and like other posters, we didn't have red. (Our also said nothing about alcohol btw)
  • Id definitely go back and have it looked at. Poor thing! It doesn't look right! Please update us!
Don't forget to ask for a second opinion of your not happy with the answer.
  • @mel0601 I'll call her doctor tomorrow and if they say it's nothing or don't see me, I'll be taking her to urgent care. And possibly find another doctor depending on the outcome.
It seems like they got the stuff on her skin, maybe applied too much?!
  • My son had silver nitrate too and his pedi said if it turned red to bring him back so your little needs to be seen...
  • Poor little girl :( That looks so painful; glad it doesn't seem to bother her! I would definitely bring her in to the doc.
  • Called the doctor, now I'm just waiting on a call back. :/
Don't they know not to leave new moms waiting?!?
  • Update.

They said it's an allergic reaction to the band aid. And gave me ointment for it.
  • Bless. Ok well at least you have an answer and a ways to fix it! Sending quick healing vibes!!
  • I don't feel like it's an allergic reaction though. The red doesn't go with where the band aid was..
I will probably end up switching peds, I didn't really like how they handled this.

I called and had to leave a voicemail, it took almost 2 hours for a call back, they had me email them pictures, and another hour later they said it was an allergic reaction and gave me ointment.

I would rather have gone in for them to actually see it, and I don't think it's what they say :/ the ointment should help either way but I'll probably find a new doctor..
