Pregnancy OCD?

Is that even a real thing, because I seriously think that I have it! I will get these terrible thoughts in my head if I don't do something a certain amount of times, and if a bad thought occurs while doing so.. I have to redo it or it will literally drive me bonkers. Do any other moms-to-be experience this, or am I losing my mind?!

Re: Pregnancy OCD?

  • I don't think pregnancy makes u suddenly have ocd...it sounds like maybe ur experiencing anxiety

  • Based on your recent posts I think you should probably mention your ongoing anxiety to your doctor. Perhaps they can recommend someone to you that might be able to help. Best of luck.

  • I have OCD, and it got a lot worse when I was about 6 weeks. I've researched, and it's normal for people to experience OCD for the first time in pregnancy. For me, working with a therapist who specializes in CBT has been life-changing! Good luck! I hope you feel better soon.

I usually wouldn't reply on a zombie thread but I think it's important to distinguish that You already had OCD before becoming pregnant-- OP didn't. pre existing conditions and possible acute conditions brought on by pregnancy aren't accurately comparable. I am glad to hear you had a good experience with CBT :-)
  • Here is more info from the OCD international foundation:

    https://iocdf.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Postpartum-OCD-Fact-Sheet.pdf

It sounds like "perinatal OCD," or OCD that occurs during pregnancy, happens, and treatment for POCD and OCD are the same.

Obviously, no one on this thread can diagnose, but having experienced and researched OCD extensively for several years, I think the symptoms you're describing could be managed by CBT...and it's always nice to have more info and know you're not alone. I know these kinds of thoughts can be worrisome and lonely, but I just want you to know someone understands!
  • I have OCD anyway, but I do think it gets worse when I am pregnant... Hormones just make everything worse  8-X

  • I feel like my general anxiety is higher, but my OCD is somewhat suppressed. I would imagine it's different for everyone, but I didn't even know POCD was a thing. Very interesting.
