Mastitis?

Ugh, I think I might have Mastitis, I feel awful. On Wednesday I had to go back and forth to Boston with my LO. Normally it's about 1 hours 45 min each way so I nursed prior to leaving Boston, but then I got stuck in horrific traffic and it was 4+ hours until I was even able to pull over to nurse again. My boobs were engorged at that point. I nursed/pumped every 2 hours after that, but the engorged feeling didn't go away and yesterday I started producing even less than normal. Last night the chills and fever started, I had such s busy day that I just lowered through it, but by afternoon I felt even worse and I called my OB. Of course no one is available until Monday morning so I made an appointment for then, but any tips for feeling better in the meantime? I read to nurse/pump as much as possible and to take ibuprofen (but I'm allergic). The little milk I'm pumping is all lumpy and strange looking but according to kellymom it's safe for LO despite the appearance. If you had mastitis and your supply dwindled, did it go back up once you felt better? I will be so upset if this is the end of BF because I have worked so hard.

Re: Mastitis?

  • I would not wait to be seen until monday. Do they have an on call line you can call like for when you thought you were in labor? I'd call and have them call you in an antibiotic tonight (to a 24hr pharmacy) or first thing in the morning. The sooner you get meds the better you will feel/recover faster. Mastitis shouldn't effect your milk and nursing more frequently can help it pass faster even though it's so hard to do when you feel so awful. Is your breast red or streaky? Warm to the touch? It also shouldn't effect your supply as long as you are nursing/pumping as usual. It's fairly typical for a slight dip in supply due to your body fighting an infection and feeling awful/dehydrated from fever. It should bounce back to normal as soon as you do but nurse, nurse, nurse! Hang in there! I've had mastitis 8 times between my 4 kids and usually I felt considerably better 24 hrs after being on antibiotics and back to normal within a few days.

You can also call your pediatrician and they will call in a prescription for you. The sooner you can get the antibiotics started the better off you will be! Also massaging any lumps you have while in the shower is helpful in getting them out; or use a warm compress right before nursing or pumping.
