Is it totally necessary to track baby's movements? They're just so sparatic, and I'm such a pessimist & worry wart, I can see myself jumping to every worst case scenario if I track all movements and he's a little inconsistent some days.
It depends how far along you are. By 30 weeks you should be feeling regular movements, and if you aren't that could be a sign that something is wrong. You aren't supposed to track all movements, as long as you have one or two active periods per day where you feel multiple movements, you don't need to worry about it. I don't do "kick counts" explicitly, like sitting down for an hour and
counting every movement, but if I went a long time without feeling
anything at all I would be concerned. I'm 33 weeks so I have many periods when I can feel clusters of movement every day so I know he's "active".
Ive never actually laid down and some kick counts. Ive always been told to just be aware of decreased movement and go from there. All my babies have always been good about keeping their movement consistent.
I was never explicitly told to do a kick count, just if I'm worried. My Dr. said to lie on my left side, have some cold water and count any movement, even if it's small. Once I get to 10, I'm good for the rest of the day. I usually get to 10 in under 10 min.
I actually do it everyday (unless I'm super busy). It gives me peice of mind to know I've counted 10.
With my first, I was diligent about counting kicks. This go round, I am more aware of what is taking place and he has pretty consistent times of the the day that he is active. I still try to count kicks when I lay down to sleep at night or if he is less active on a particular day. As long as I get movement at one of his "regular" times, I know he's good
I count whenever something happens that makes me anxious. Like, when I have a bad stomach ache or cramps, or when I get my belly bumped into. My OB said 6 per hour is normal but I would never actually track it unless I was concerned.
I kick count if I noticed I haven't felt movement in a little while. My OB recommended doing a kick count anytime I can't remember the last time I felt movement. Luckily at 37 weeks she's moving all the time, so I don't really have to kick count anymore.

I don't count other than that.
