Sinus infection and pregnant

So it happened, one of the things I dreaded the most while being pregnant. I have been hit with a sinus infection. Normally I can fend them off with regularly using my neti pot, ibuprofen, flonase, mucinex d, sleep, and lots of water. Now I can't take my meds lineup and I'm lost! I could hardly get though the last half of work today because I was feeling so awful. Any home remedies? I'm taking tomorrow off work to rest, but I need new ammunition in my fight against these blasted sinus infections. Help!

Re: Sinus infection and pregnant

  • I'm with you. I got a cold 7 days ago, and have improved minimally. I went to urgent care today for the confirmation that "yeah, it's either a viral or bacterial sinus infection, but doctors really don't recommend taking anything. Here's a prescription for an antibiotic, but don't fill it unless you don't feel better in 5 days"

I'm miserable. I'm just drinking lots of tea, using saline spray, and staying home from work. ugh.

  • Ok this may seem weird but I'm totally trying it next time I'm sick (meds don't agree with me for the most part so I try and stay away). I read if you take an onion and put it on your bedside table it sucks all the toxins out of the room and away from you. I also read to slice and put in your socks at night. I don't know if I could do the socks thing but the other seems doable.
I'm also a fan of essential oils! Maybe a eucalyptus blend?

  • I just had the worst sinus infection I have ever had, and that's saying a lot! I ended up having to go on Augmenten because I could barely move my head. My doctor said it would be safe, and with the fevers I was having it was better to treat it than not. I sincerely hope you're able to rid yourself of yours before it gets anywhere near that point! I did find that breathing over a pot of steam helped to loosen some of the congestion. There is also a nasal spray called Xlear that is all natural and safe for pregnancy. They sell it at whole foods! Also, garlic is said to be a natural antibiotic.. So eating more of it and gargling with garlic and salt water is something my mom swears by. I hope you feel better!
  • All natural organic elderberry syrup.
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies.  I've been using my neti pot several times a day, breathing in steam, sleeping on an extra pillow to stay elevated, and drinking an insane amount of water.  I also found eating super hot stuff clears my sinuses, temporarily at least.  So i indulged in some hot salsa and jalapeños, yum! I'm actually a little better this morning. Sure hoping this will be the only sinus infection I have during this pregnancy.  This has been pretty miserable. I might try the boiling water with a towel over my head thing later.  I read to add garlic to the water? Figured it can't hurt.
  • De ja vu? If you look there is more info on this topic a few threads down! You can also type this I'm the search function for some great info. Good luck.
  • Yep, searched already on other boards and all over the internet prior to posting here. Sorry for giving you "deja vu". Was looking for support from mama's in the same month as me. Isn't that what this board is for?

I had one at ten weeks and took regular mucinex to help clear it out. I also use flonase daily because without it I have constant sinus infection (chronic sinusitis and polyps). Check with your regular doc, they'll probably be fine with it.

FWIW I'm 27 weeks now and baby is perfectly healthy.
