BF and formula help!!!

My LO is 2 weeks old and has been having issues with Breast milk. He is fussy and cries and is also very gassy. Sometimes he takes the breast fine and other times he cries after a few sips. I started cutting out dairy on Sunday to see if that is the problem. I'm also on antibiotic for mastitis and about to start antibiotic for UTI.

Anyhow he didn't sleep well last night. Woke up every hour and cried and cried for the most part. He continued this all morning so I gave him some formula to see if that helped. He drank it happily and fell asleep right away. So it seems my BM is making him sick. Is it ok to give him some formula at night or mix formula with BM? Not sure if this is going to mess up his tummy. I just want him to be ok.

TIA.

I do bm during day and formula at night but I've never mixed the 2. But I don't see why it would be bad? hope you both feel better soon!

  • It's fine to supplement formula at some
Feeding and use breastmilk at other feedings but it is not recommended to mix them in the same bottle and give it to the baby if that's what you mean. Everything I have read says not to mix them together.
  • When you cut dairy, it can take a week or so to take effect. It could be that he was hungry! Did you try bottle feeding your breast milk at all? Maybe he's more efficient with a bottle?

  • I had a preemie and the nutritionist recommended that I add 1tsp of formula to 150ml of bm. This increases the calories. It's only good for 24 hrs though once mixed.
  • We do a bottle of formula at night. I started it in the hospital - he did not sleep at all the first night, and the second night I was passing out while he nursed, I was so tired. Hubby gave him a bottle of formula and cuddled while I slept, and we've kept a similar routine most nights. I think he sleeps more soundly with a tummy full of formula. He is pretty gassy but the gas doesn't seem to upset him. He burps easily and farts a lot, lol. No idea if it's my bm, the formula, or a combo that make him so gassy.

  • You can mix formula with breastmilk. We did this in the nicu in order to increase the calories of my BM.
  • I have been using Similac supplemental formula about twice a day, one of them being at night. Then pumping bm for the day time. My LO didn't latch very well even while using a shield and I also don't produce that much so she was very fussy bc she wasn't getting enough to eat. Once I started pumping and supplementing, she's much happier and I know for sure how much she's getting to eat.
  • So this is my fourth baby I am breast feeding. With two of my babies I needed to be on antibiotics at some point in the first months for mastitis and the same thing happened with my babies while I was on the antibiotics. During the period I was on the medicine I pumped and dumped and supplemented with my breast milk that I previously saved or used formula. It was hard to dump the milk for a whole week but I noticed my baby was not tolerating my milk while I was on antibiotics. Was your baby ok with the milk before the antibiotics? Good luck!m
