Polyp discovered near fallopian tube during HSG

I cross-posted this on the TTC over 35 group as well as I felt it relevant to share in both groups...

So I'm pretty much a wreck right now.  Just finished clomid for my 2nd round of IUI and had my HSG today.  My left side is great.. everything is working.  My right side had what my RE called a polyp blocking where the uterus joins the fallopian tubes.  On the xray screen, I could actually see like a tiny ball in the upper right part of my uterus where the fallopian tubes join.

My RE said that on Wednesday when I go back in for my appt, he will see how my ovaries are doing. We saw both sides had follicles growing last week but we need the left side to be working.  If the left side is doing okay, we may still go ahead with the IUI.  Last month my left ovary kept hiding from the ultrasound so we only saw I had a decent follicle on the right ovary (oh the irony... probably was a wasted IUI).

He hinted at possibly surgery and that IVF may be our only future option after this month.  I'm PCOS, DH has more of an EDD issue so that's whywe have been seeing an RE.

Anyone else recently had to go through a surgery or procedure to remove a polyp?  I'm so mad and angry at my body.  This is just one more thing to add to that list of reasons why I haven't been able to get pregnant yet. :-(

Re: Polyp discovered near fallopian tube during HSG

  • I had a polyp in my tube which they thought may have caused at least one of my ectopic pregnancies. Surgery is easy and painless. We went on two months later to begin IVF. Pregnant with the first frozen implant. I also have PCOS. It felt never ending and always something wrong

  • Thank you, @Wicked4589!  This is so great to hear.  What kind of surgery did you have?  I'm reading that they most commonly do laproscopy or a hysteroscopy.  I'm turning 38 in November and really wanted to be pregnant, but if I need to have surgery, I rather do it now and start 2016 with IVF.
  • I have unexplained infertility and have had polyps removed twice. Mine were near the opening of my uterus. I had them removed through hysteroscopy. It was very easy. I was put under using general anesthesia and the surgery took less than 30 minutes. I always take the following day off because I feel exhausted after the anesthesia. It's really frustrating how great my uterus is at growing polyps and not a baby!

  • I have PCOS. When I was diagnosed they saw a polyp on my ultrasound. My doctor said it was likely caused by the irregularity of my periods. Not having a cycle for so long probably allowed a little extra to grow. He offered two options 1) schedule a quick easy surgery (hysteroscopy) or 2) induce a period to see if it would shed on its own. I got lucky and it shed on its own! That said if it is what up in/near your tube shedding naturally may not be possible and as others have said it may be a risk for ectopic :(

Now I also have a blocked tube on my right side, not cause by a polyp. My doctor recommended agains tubal surgery as it can cause more harm than good. He just recommended we monitor cycles and forgo the IUI of I ovulate on the right....
  • Thank you for the information. Because of my age and now this issue, I find that an IUI would be a really long shot at best for me. It's hard to think it would be the best for me to go on clomid or injections in hopes my left ovary develops follicles and can be seen on the ultrasound.

I'm so sore and crampy. Feels like I did the ultimate lower abdominal workout. Sleep has been crap. I just need to get through today so I can talk to my RE more on Wednesday.
  • Good luck with your appointment! Wishing you the best!
  • I haven't posted on here before but I thought I'd share my experience. Back in February my doctor found that I had a fibroid and sent me off to her preferred RE. He did an ultrasound and found what appeared to be 8 or 9 fibroids throughout my uterus, so we went ahead and scheduled a hysteroscopy.

The surgery itself was incredibly easy. They used general anesthesia, there aren't any incisions, and you're back up and running later that day. My surgery was about 2 hours and they ended up removing 15 fibroids. There were still a lot of fibroids left so I went back for a laparoscopy in late August. It was a 4 hour surgery and definitely took a little more recovery because there were 4 incisions, but with a Friday surgery I was still able to go back to work on Monday.

Since you said you only have one polyp inside the uterus you should be able to stick with a hysteroscopy.

    Good luck!
  • Mine was through a hysteroscopy. My husband and I really thought we would never get pregnant. 5 years of TTC with specialists and being told we would not conceive naturally, it was hard. I eventually did get pregnant twice on my own even though they both ended in ectopic pregnancies. Listen to your doc, they will take great care of you :) my RE and IVF clinic doc have truly been my most favorite people in the world. Well, besides my husband. Lol I am forever greatful for them and how they worked with us.
  • Just wanted to follow up with this and say my RE said it was a cornual polyp at the entrance of the tube, not in the uterus. Because of where it is, he felt that there would be more damage done in trying to remove it. We have agreed with the RE'S recommendation to go to IVF. While I'm sad not to have a chance this cycle, I think we are headed in the right direction.
