Breastfeeding Encouragement

Hey guys! I've been breastfeeding my LO for a month and a half and I'm getting discouraged and really exhausted. SO is a truck driver so he isn't home much and no help with LO. LO has been feeding almost every hour and isn't satisfied. I know formula will keep him fuller longer, but I also now BFing is very beneficial for him. I'm just doubting the fact that maybe LO isn't getting fully satisfied with breast milk. I just need some kinda encouragement, a friend or something to help me push through this.

Re: Breastfeeding Encouragement

  • Is your LO gaining weight like he should? If so, I wouldn't worry that he's not get enough milk. No judgement at all though. Do what you need to do.

  • My first ate 12-14 times a day till she was almost a year old. It was easily every hour of her awake time for the first several months. She is perfectly healthy, but it does turn out she has a lip tie. Probably also contributed to her reflux issues that first year. It just took her a long time to transfer, and she ate frequently. Have you been to an LC just to see how much she is actually taking in during a feeding or have you had him evaluated for a lip/tongue tie. Some babies just eat frequently, but it doesn't hurt to get checked out if it really is every hour. Also, is he actually eating or is he comfort nursing? Some babies also like to comfort nurse. If this has only been for a few days, it is likely a growth spurt or if it s only during a certain period of the day, then it is likely just cluster feeding that will lessen as he gets older. You might work on learning to nurse in a carrier also just so that you don't feel quite so tied down. Either way, it is such a short period of time in the grand scheme of things. Try to enjoy the time with him while he is little. My oldest will be 3 in December, and she rarely wants to snuggle anymore. They grow up really fast.
  • If the advice above doesn't help, you could try to pump 1-2 small bottles a day. That would give you an idea how much baby is getting, and can give your nipples a well deserved break.

  • Could also try supplementing with a small amount of formula a couple of times a day to see if that helps.
  • If you still need some motivation let me try to help you....I go through that too. My biggest reminder is the connection she is able to rely on mommy. There is no one else in the whole wide world but YOU that he wants and needs. Make sure your setting aside 20 minutes on each side. Pump after you breast feed and give that to him when you're done. Hope this helps.
