Food allergy question

I'll start by saying that no one in my family has a food allergy. I eat peanut butter daily. It seems that every time I eat it DD wants to be picked up or cuddled. I am careful to scrub my hands before holding her. But what if she's allergic and my kiss causes a reaction. Does this happen? We obviously won't know for years if she's allergic and I doubt she is given our family history, but just what if? Sitting here eating a PB sandwich and wondering...

Re: Food allergy question

  • She could just have a sensitivity to it. If it was a serious thing you would definitely know it, speaking from experience. If you have further questions you should contact you pediatrician. =)

  • Kids can have peanut allergies with no family history! My nephew is allergic. official recommendations change from year to year, but I'm fairly certain the latest one is that early exposure by mother eating peanuts during pregnancy or bf'ing and giving small amounts of pb as early as 6 months leads to a decrease in chances the child will be allergic. Of course, when my sister had kids, she was advised to avoid peanuts at all cost until age 2. She did that and her son turned out to be allergic (no one else in the family is). In a few more years, I'm sure recommendations will change AGAIN, lol. The important thing is to be vigilant and if you see signs of a reaction (hives, swelling, trouble breathing), go to an er. If you suspect an allergy, you can always have a blood test done with young ones!

  • Peanut allergies are fewer in countries where young babies are exposed to peanuts at an earlier age. It does seem now that the consensus is to not avoid peanut products. I eat trail mix while I breastfeed and drop peanuts all over my baby. He's totally fine. It's similar to people that try to avoid germs altogether, they don't have a chance to build an immunity and therefore become more susceptible.
  • I was thinking of this the other day. My 2yo was covered in peanut butter (face, hands, etc) and swooped in, grabbed baby's face and gave her a big kiss on the lips. Afterwards I thought, well, I guess she's not allergic! Like others said though, current research suggests early introduction is better, and the current recommendation is to introduce it anytime after 6 months.

  • I am the poster child for peanut butter consumption and yet DD2 is allergic. Luckily, she is not so sensitive to ban the product from the house. I continue eating PB with LO and just remain observant should a mild reaction present itself as per pediatrician advise.
