Single Vessel Umbilical and Velamentous Cord Insertion

Hi mommies. Just had 20-week ultrasound and got the news we have both conditions above. Did anyone else get diagnosed with this?

We have to go for a fetal echogram next week and can expect more monitoring for growth, etc.

Would love to hear testimonials and connect with other preggos with this condition.

  • No experience or knowledge about these things beyond reading, but prayers that your babe is healthy and all the tests go well. Let us know how the echogram goes. <3

  • I was just getting on to see if anyone had a marginal cord insertion and saw this!

We have an appt Tuesday and I'm sure we'll get more answers then.

They are different and I believe yours is more serious of the 2. Prayers everything is ok.
  • We had our anatomy scan today and Baby B has a Single Umbilical Artey. Apparently it's more common in twins. We scheduled a fetal echogram for next Friday, so I'm just trying to think positive thoughts since our verfi/progenity testing came back negative. Unfortunately the Genetic Counselor they sent in completely freaked me out she immediately started talking about getting an amino and selective reduction.

Right now our plan is to get the echogram and go from there. We will skip the amino if those results are good as the baby seems to be developing properly and I'm hesitant to risk him and his brother.
  • @SarahJean1014 let me know how your echo goes. We did the early genetic test too via blood work. Everything came back negative. My concern is more about development of the heart, kidneys and digestive system. It seems those are the parts that should be most closely monitored. Thanks for your post. Glad to have found other mommies on here going through the same issues!
  • @rsquaredr thanks for posting. We met with the high-risk Doctor and at the hospital and he eased our worries quite a bit. Keep in touch.
  • Jumping board from the Feb 2016 Group. I have been diagnosed with velamentous cord insertion as well. They found mine at my anatomy scan on week 18. I went to a MFM specialist on week 19. At that time they couldn't figure out if it was marginal or velamentous. The baby was also in the way of the cord. So they suggested I come back in a couple weeks. I went this week (week 22) and it was confirmed that the cord was not attached to the placenta at all. My baby is getting her nutrients from the amniotic fluid in there. At this point in time they say it's not an issue. They want to continue to monitor growth scans every 4 weeks. As I get further along they will make a birthing plan but it most likely means C-section and possible early delivery.

  • The echo went great and baby boy looks healthy. When I saw my doctor yesterday she was not at all concerned. She told me it was pretty common and they are already going to be monitoring me closely because it's twins.

I hope your appointment is just as positive.
  • I have a single vessel cord. They do an ultrasound every couple of weeks to check his heart and kidneys. At first, I was completely freaked out but I realized that wasn't helping me or baby. My brother's girlfriend (who's a doctor) delivered several babies with single vessel cords and they've all been healthy. My coworker had the same condition and has a perfectly normal and healthy 17 year old now. Try not to worry!
  • I had my 20 week appointment yesterday and they said we have Marginal Cord Insertion too. I have an appointment with a specialist on Tuesday to get some more info on it. Hoping for the best for all of us!
