Membrane Sweep. Crossing fingers!

39 weeks, 1 day today! Doc swept my membranes at my appt yesterday afternoon, so I'm crossing my fingers for a birthday in the next few days! Any STMs who have had luck with membrane sweeps? So excited to meet my little man!!

Re: Membrane Sweep. Crossing fingers!

  • I hope it works for you, I had mine done on Monday didn't deliver until Saturday so it was a bust for me as far as putting me into hard labor but I do feel like it got the ball rolling smoothly as j was only 38-1 when it was done. Good luck hopefully you get baby soon!!

  • Thanks! I don't know if he will come really soon, but hopefully it will get the ball rolling. I am wanting him to arrive by his due date, which is next Tuesday. Eeek! :) Congrats on your little one, @sydneyellen! Hope all went well for you.
  • I'm a FTM, but I had mine done Monday afternoon. I was at 2 cm when he did it and I've just felt crampy (and a little nauseous) since then but nothing that I know are definite consistent contractions. My mom never felt consistent contractions with me and was ready to push when she got to the hospital so I am paranoid....especially since I have about a 50 minute drive.
  • @dparker721 best of luck! Hopefully baby will come soon for you (assuming you are ready)! I know what you mean about the anxiety. I'm worried about not catching onto the fact that I'm having contractions or am in labor until I'm super close to delivering. I've been crampy since I had it done yesterday, but can't tell if they're contractions. Nothing consistent.
  • I am so ready too!  I had one done yesterday at 39+2, the Dr. said I was 2-3cm. I am SO hoping this will get things going, I am so eager to meet our little one.  I had more bleeding than I thought yesterday, (more than the "spotting" Dr. said I would have) but now it has stopped and I guess I am still waiting my my mucous plug.
  • I have been 1 cm and 50% effaced since 36 weeks, so I am definitely hoping this speeds things up! I am ready to have him! I have a feeling he is coming soon. Not sure why, but I just have a hunch. So hoping I am right! I have had more than just spotting with my cervical checks and the membrane sweep, but it always goes away in 12-24 hours so nothing too concerning. :) Hopefully it will work for both of us and we will have little ones in our arms in a few days or less!!!! Without going into too much detail, I feel like I may have lost my plug this morning, but it was smaller than I was expecting and more of a string than a glob, so not sure if that was it or not. Not sure what it looks like, so could have been.
  • @jadi1215 I am 39 weeks and 1 cm too and have been since like 37 weeks . I just had mine stripped fingers crossed it will work! I went on a 2 mile walk afterwards hoping to speed along the process . We will see :) keep us posted if it worked for you !
  • @Aldermanbaby, good luck! I will definitely post if he comes in the next few days. Hope it works for you! Let me know.
  • @Aldermanbaby any luck for you? It's been three days for me and still pregnant. Hoping labor will begin today (wishful thinking, I'm sure ;))!
  • I had mine done yesterday and still nothing !
  • I had mine done yesterday and I've had steady contractions since but they are still averaging about 10 minutes apart. I also lost what I'm thinking is the rest of my plug this morning (I know this really means nothing but still nice when something happens!)
  • I had this done with my first son and it didn't do anything for me. In fact, out of the three friends I have who also had it done around 38-39 weeks, one had to be induced because she was late, and the other two it didn't seem to make a difference for either. :( But my baby came on his due date anyway, so at least he wasn't late! My impression is that it's a bit of a crap shoot and really only helps if your body is already preparing for labor, but I don't know what clinical evidence there is to support the practice. It seems like it's done fairly often, though, so it must work for some!
  • @jadi1215 yes!! My water broke at 3am this morning now I am just sitting in the hospital on pitocin waiting for contractions
  • I am two days out from my membrane sweep. I was 3-4 cm dilated and 70% effaced. Yesterday (the morning after the sweep) I was sick all day. Vomiting and diarrhea. No spotting at all. Today I have had more cramping than usual and some thick discharge but that's it. I am pretty disappointed :(
  • @Aldermanbaby so excited for you and jealous that I haven't had the same progress! Lol! Best of luck with your delivery!
@mamax22015 I am disappointed too. :-/ I was crampy after having it done and have felt a little nauseous the past 48 hours or so, but no real progress. I've tried a few other old wives tale tricks that haven't helped either. Baby is going to do what he wants I suppose. I am ready when he is!
  • How early will doctors sweep your membrane? I knowwwww, I'm going to ask mine at my next appt BUT I'm curious until then!
  • I'm not sure how early. It may depend on your progress. Mine didn't mention it until my 39-week appt. I've been 1 cm and 50% effaced since 36 weeks, so she said she was doing it to see if we can move things along. I know that doesn't really answer your question, so hopefully someone else will have a little more info. Sorry!
  • Oh, bummer. Thanks! My office doesn't do regular cervix checks (they think its false hope lol) I'll just ask at my next appt. I have time, only 37w tomorrow. But I sure am anxious to get the ball rolling in a couple weeks!!
  • @kim1228 my previous doctor wouldn't do it until 39 weeks because it was technically considered an induction technique. I've never asked my new doctor.

Doctors don't usually do here until after 40 weeks. But I'm being induced the day before my due date so she dos mine at 39 weeks to try and jump start things !
  • @Aldermanbaby curious to know how your delivery went. Still no baby here (bummed!). Hope all is well!
  • I'm 4 cm dilated 90% effaced and had my membranes swept on Wednesday, had some pretty strong contractions but this little lady is just taking her sweet time. ♡
  • So silly question here - what does it mean to sweep your membranes? And what does it feel like? I'm 40+1 today and I'm seeing my doc on Monday. Trying to figure out if this is something I should ask for. Thanks!
  • I had it done 3 days ago and the Dr. takes their finger and separates the amniotic sack from your cervix. It didn't hurt me at all but I did have bleeding and cramping afterward. I also lost all of my mucus plug yesterday. I am 40 weeks tomorrow and hoping to go into labor asap!! :-)
  • @lmetters88 thanks for responding! That's good to know it can be painless. I had my cervix checked 2 days ago and I'm pretty sure I've been losing my mucus plug today. Fingers crossed for us both that we get to meet our little ones soon, thank you very much!
  • @mizzthang007 my membrane sweep was painless as well. I don't think there is any risk to having it done, so I would ask your doc to do it when you are there next. I had mine done at 39w and am 39w5d with no baby yet, but I too had cramping and bleeding afterward, and definitely more BH contractions the past couple days. Hoping my body is moving in the right direction! I am so ready to have this little one.
  • Had my membranes swiped on Monday and still pregnant today. I did however lose my MP and have had some contractions and cramping but still waiting! Think it may have helped move somethings along but still waiting.
