how do you cope with being hungry all the time

Hi ladies! I am 11 weeks along and have gained 9 lbs so far because I am so hungry all the time. I don't even crave bad things, but salad won't do it for me. I have 2 big bowls of oatmeal in the morning and by lunchtime I am starving. So I bring big lunches of brown rice or pasta. 2 hours later or so I need to snack on carrots and creamcheese. When I get home I have a meal that doubless the size of my husbands. And if I don't have another bowl of cereals I wake ip during the night so hungry that I can't sleep any more. I really want to control the food intake but literally can't... weight gain is nuts. Anybody else like me?

Re: how do you cope with being hungry all the time

  • Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day rather less bigger meals

Don't snack on dairy or anything processed unless it's here and there as a treat just snack fruit and raw veggies

And finally exercise as best as possible 30 mins of walking a day does really good

When you do eat your meals cut down on anything super high fat such as dairy
There is no need for dairy products 4 times a day

Eat well rounded healthy meals if you don't have any food adversions cut down on oil

chew slowly don't wolf your food down it takes some time before your stomach signals your brain to realize you are full
Drink a full glass of water before each meal
And eat your meals at a table away from TV or electronics which can make you snack or eat more

    And finally ask yourself
Am I really hungry or just bored ?

  • I feel your pain! I have gained 6lbs already and I'm only 8w5d. :( I feel hungry all day and it's the most intense hunger pains I have ever felt, it's awful. I try to eat every 2 hours and have snacks with me at work. I told the OB how hungry I've been and he reassured me that my appetite will eventually normalize.

Girl, I feel your pain on this. I try to eat small meals and snacks throughout the day but every two hours, I have to eat something. But with such extreme food aversions, its hard to find healthy options. I've finally been able to start eating salad and fruit (it made me feel too sick before) but its like eating nothing. Seriously, I eat an apple every day and like clockwork, my stomach always growls about 10-15 minutes later, almost like it makes me hungrier.

And to @asunna regarding "am I really hungry or just bored?" I wish I was just bored! Before pregnancy, I did find that I had to ask myself this, I like eating and would eat when I was bored! But now... ugh.... I never ACTUALLY feel like eating. With the nausea and food aversions and all that, eating never really sounds fun. Its the stomach pains I get when my stomach starts to growl that I can't handle!

  • It doesn't sound like you're eating much protein... I would cut out a lot of the carbs and try to eat meat or something else high in protein. I definitely feel your struggle though.

  • I eat... :-(

    image
  • I keep wheat thins and cheese handy all day, and saltines by my bedside for when it wakes me up.

Don't worry about the weight gain, focus on the nutrients you're giving baby.

  • Can you handle eating nuts, seeds, Chia seeds, peanut butter, or beans? You're probably lacking protein. Your body is still starving for nutrition on a cellular level.

  • I try to eat smaller portions more frequently throughout the day so that I'm munching pretty constantly.

I try to eat protein -- carb-loaded days always come back to bite me.

I drink a lot of warm liquids: 60-calorie "Soup on the Go" or 25-calorie diet/light hot cocoa

I make it a goal to drink one big ol' thing of PowerAde zero each day.

I try to put fruits and veggies in my lineup: Apple slices, veggies mixed with mashed potatoes or rice

I avoid sweets as much as possible, but I do probably have one sweet at least per day.

I suck on low-calorie popsicles or sugar-free hard candies.

I try not to eat unless I am showing true physical signs of hunger.

That said, 9 weeks, gained 5 pounds.

  • I have suggested this on numerous threads but WATERMELON. It is the unofficial sponsor of my pregnancy.

It is hydrating, filling, delicious, and you don't have to feel guilty about eating it. I'm enjoying some right now!

    WATERMELON FO LIFE.

  • I'm with ya!  I used to have a diet full of fruit and veggies and now all I crave is carbs, anything with tomato sauce and LOTS OF FLAVOR!  I feel like crap - combination of morning (all the time) sickness, and because of the crappy foods I'm eating.  Second time around for me and same cravings, so I'm trying to be smarter this time to not gain so much weight, but it's so hard when I can't stomach the thought of a salad, but pasta - LET ME HAVE IT!!!

SO this week I've been doing a better job at fruit - I read pineapple helps with nausea so I've been having some each morning and I think helping...also I noticed that when I drink a fruit smoothie I feel about as amazing as I can at this point in the game. SO - I'm making myself drink a smoothy - even though it takes about 2 hours to finish one, haha!  That's helping me stomach veggies better now too.

Ugh - exercise has been tough between the nausea and exhaustion, but when I've been able to get outside in the fresh air for a walk it feels great!

Hang in there momma!!  You're doing great! :)

    WATERMELON FO LIFE.

Everytime you post this I think of the episode of Full House when Becky was pregnant with the twins and feigning for watermelon. I think it was out of season, so hot ass Uncle Jesse had to go to Mexico for it?

  • I have never been so hungry in my entire life. I feel like if I don't have a little something every couple hours I am starving mixed with nausea. Sometimes having a glass of milk helps curb the hunger, but mainly I try to have small portions of food that I can tolerate around me all day. Snacks just dont do it for me anymore, and I was a huge fan of snacks before preganancy to get my thru my day. Now I just want real food all the time.
  • I am pretty hungry throughout the day. I just try to eat small, frequent meals. At night though, I'm finding I'm not hungry at all and I really don't want anything to do with food- which pre-pregnancy was definitely not the case.

I make sure I have fruit or nuts on hand. I do make sure it is one serving of nuts though, otherwise I could go overboard.

It's not easy but I'm still up 10lbs from my normal weight and I don't want to put on too much weight this pregnancy.

  • @yogahh OMG! I used to LOVE full house and definitely remember that episode! I'll totes make my husb fly to Mexico if the bodega near my house runs out...

  • I exercise zero self control and eat all the things. Also, I have really been after watermelon as yogahh mentioned from the show--that is me! In all seriousness, I do try to pack healthy snacks (greek yogurt with strawberries in the a.m., nuts and cheese or dried apricots for the afternoon).

I used to get most of my protein through chicken, but it's a huge food aversion now - I have to hide it in things (wraps with other things in it) or soups. But I've also had to branch out, and the most random things appeal to me now. I went to Whole Foods to grab something from the hot bar for dinner, and the only thing that looked good to me was meat loaf. I hate meat loaf. I hate the term meat loaf. My neighbor once brought a meat loaf over, and I put it in the garbage. But I ate that shit, and it was delicious. Sounds like you need to eat more lean protein, so maybe go to a place that has prepared foods and see what doesn't make you want to vomit. You may be shocked and surprised.
  • Same here...I've never been so hungry in my life!! And I have major aversion to chicken veggies, and salad dressing. Gained 6 lbs so far (10w5d). I try to eat a few healthy things, and if that doesn't sit I abandon my good intentions and eat triscuits:)
  • I know what you mean!! I am SO hungry all the time...

I've also been trying to be good about smaller frequent meals and snacks, but it's still hard to not go overboard. I'm not good about eating healthy, which doesn't help...I constantly want gooey cheesey butter loaded things and it's been a trial to stay away, lol. And I am allllllll about everything tomato, but that isn't as bad as cheesy fries and breakfast tacos every day, so I don't hold back as much on that. :)

Unfortunately for me, I had some bad issues for years and finally found out I can't handle gluten, just a few months ago. I've had to give up so so many of my favorite foods, and this pregnancy and hunger makes it WAY harder. All I can think about is fresh warm bread, cheese ravioli, jimmy johns, subway, crepes, dinner rolls, flour tortillas, spagettios, bread, breakfast sandwiches, mac n' cheese, green bean cassarole, toast...I could go on and on!
  • I cope with hunger by eating all the food!! I usually eat reasonably healthy but lately it's been pizza, ice cream, Mexican, burgers, Mac and cheese...you get the idea. I'm finally ( at 11 weeks) feeling it slow down a bit. I've gained only 2 lbs amazingly. Also...this may be TMI but I only weigh in first thing in the morning after good poop days since its most comparable to my before weight. No point in checking weight when two days worth of food is still sitting in your body.
  • It sounds like you might be on carbohydrate overload. Carbohydrates are digested faster leaving you feeling hungry faster. Try getting in as much protein as possible. Chicken, turkey, salmon, Greek yogurt, nuts, or even a protein shake if you have to. Higher protein foods will keep you satiated for much longer and will also help you stay more lean if you're worried about weight gain. Hope this helps :)
  • I right there with you ladies. I am hungry all day long, and nothing helps. Meat in general is an aversion for me, I now hate the smell of chicken or steak. The only meat I can tolerate is meat loaf, which I love, and make at least once a week now. I try eating lots of protein like yogurt and nuts, but i'm still starving an hour later no matter what I eat. I guess I'm a lucky one because I eat all day, but have only gained a pound (I'm 10 weeks). I'm trying to make sure I take lots of fruit with me to work, my coworkers even make fun of me because every time they come to my desk I have a new snack out. Crackers (I just take the whole box to my desk), fruit (at least two different ones), veggies,a Luna bar, yogurt, plus my lunch...all in an 8 hour work day!
  • Glad to hear I am not the only one.i have always been a good eater but now my stomach is literally hurting if i don't have a good meal every 3 hours or so. I am definitely on a carb overload, can't really stomach proteins. I also struggle with insomnia so I suspect feeling exhausted does makre it worse. Here us to hoping the second trimester will be better foodwise..
    .thanks for your sweet replies!
  • I've never been so hungry, so frequently, and so nauseated and food adverse all at the same time. It's nuts. I'm generally a salad eating, largely vegetarian healthy nut. Now the idea of salad makes me queasy, and I'm craving salami (not eating it cause of the risks).

I'm also recovering from some serious disordered eating in early life... Think body dismorphia/ verging on anorexia... So this is a very ripe time for me to confront those issues. I've put on about 10 pounds, and I have to let myself know IT'S OKAY. I'm listening to my wisdom, to my intuition. That's the kind of thing that's going to make me a great momma... Not starving myself because I'm worried about a few pounds. This baby needs a healthy mind and spirit as much as a healthy body.
  • All I can think about is food ALL. DAY. EVERY. DAY. Currently contemplating what I'm going to have for dinner while munching on candy I bought for "trick or treaters."
