Things getting harder?

Hi all, our LO is just over 4 weeks old, and we feel like lately things have been getting more and more difficult.  It seems just recently he has become more fussy, fighting ALL naps during the day to where he just fusses throughout the day, and waking up way more often during the night.  Sometimes taking 2 hours to get back down to sleep again.

Is this typical behavior around the 4 week marker?  Those of you with older little one's, around what week did you notice things starting to get easier?  I've heard between weeks 6-8, which isn't too far off, but still seems SO far away!!

Right now it seems like all he does is eat, poop and cry!  Our mantra in our house is "this too shall pass"...but WHEN?!

I'm in the same boat as you. 4 weeks, and my super chill LO is suddenly fussy, hates his crib, and would stay attached to my boob all day of I let him. I cried the other night because every time I put him down to sleep, he'd wake up after no more than 20 minutes and start crying- loudly. Hang in there. Hopefully relief comes soon!

  • 4 weeks is a growth spurt so is 6 then 8 so expect fussy. My pediatrician said (baby 6 weeks ) to expect him to be fussy around 5 to 9 pm now that he's aware of things around him he's going to get over stimulated because he can't interact with what he's seeing yet. Expect crying to get his excess energy out. I was like oh great lol
  • DD is a little past 5 weeks. Wee 3 was rough for us but the end of week four was soo nice! She was actually on a feeding schedule (dictated by her but) I could see a pattern and predict the next time she'd be up. Then last night rolled around and BAM! sucker punched! From what I've seen on the board, the beginning of week 5 is also a doozy.

  • There are a lot of ups and downs during the first few months because newborns go through so many growth spurts and mental leaps.  After a while they will slow down and you will be better prepared to deal with them because you will be more rested and having longer periods of happy baby in between.
  • My baby is 1 month old and also has been more fussy. We went to see her pediatrician yesterday and he said they can be fussy because of gas or maybe acid reflux. He told me to try gripe water and I feel like it's really helped my baby. Also, he said to try mylanta as a trial to see if she has acid reflux. He said if it helped and I noticed a different he'd call in a prescription for Zantac. Maybe ask ur pediatrician!

Definitely this! We're going through it right now with our 6 week old. Last night she refused to sleep unless someone was with her. Before that, she was doing really well in her crib.

  • I recommend looking into the wonder weeks. There's an app too you can buy. image
  • We are currently out driving the neighborhood at 9 p.m. with hopes LO will soon shut his eyes and get some sleep! He's been up pretty much through the whole day. He's not even close to the 16+ hours of sleep they say he should be getting.

Thanks for your responses ladies. It helps knowing that others are experiencing similar situations, because you definitely feel like the only one sometimes!

Really hoping this will pass in a few days.
  • It will pass! And then baby will make up for it by sleeping a ton for a day or two so he's just banking his sleep. Good luck! :)
