Testing/ultrasound before 10wks?

Hi June mommies!!:) So I visited my general doctor Monday and the only thing he had me do was urine pregnancy test. I requested a HCG blood test but he wouldn't allow it? So my first visit won't be until 10 weeks with an OBGYN. Seems late to me.
Should I insist on any testing before then or be patient? Anyone else having to wait this long? I guess the plus side will be that the ultrasound could show more detail of the itty bitty then!

Re: Testing/ultrasound before 10wks?

  • That's normal. If you aren't high risk and don't have a history of miscarriage or infertility, there's no real reason to be seen before then.

  • That normal. I'll be 9 weeks at my first appointment on the 28th.

  • I'll be 9 weeks at mine, and it's only for blood work, then my next is 13 weeks where we'll try to hear the heartbeat.
  • I'm high risk due to an MTHFR genetic defect. I just saw my doc Monday, but no tests run. I go back in week and a half (7.5 weeks) for my ultrasound and to hopefully hear the heartbeat and have blood work done. Then I'll be scheduled to see a high risk doctor. If you aren't high risk, I think that's normal.
  • We see at 8 weeks after LMP to date, bloodtests, etc. Every OB is different.

  • I've also only had a urine confirmation (which is ridiculous because it's exactly the same as the home pregnancy tests) and won't see the OB until 10 weeks. It seems normal, but I feel your pain! I'm getting so anxious and impatient! I guess that's part of the norm :)

  • Thank you everyone! Ok....I'll try to wait patiently! @redheadbride15.....we can be impatient together ha: ). I wish the doctor would have said "because you are considered low risk we don't have any concerns right now". That would have given me adequate info to not worry so much. Thank you for sharing what your doctors have said/what your experiences have been as I'm a first time mom. I'm sure 10 weeks will be here before I know it.
  • I see the prenatal nurse at 8 weeks since lmp and then my OB at 12 weeks. Based on my last pregnancy, I'm assuming they will end up scheduling an early ultrasound. Plus this time around my cycle length is about 39 days vs the 28 they base everything on so I know that basing a due date on 28 days doesn't make sense. I'm pretty sure that's reason enough to do an ultrasound early to determine due date. My ob office has you come in for a blood test once you have a positive hpt but not sure everyone does that. I like to be sure.

  • Also, if you have questions/concerns before your first appt don't hesitate to call. It's a great way to get a feel for your doctor and if you don't like how something is handled you can switch early on to someone you like better.

  • My doc sees newly expectant moms between weeks 8 & 11. First time, I knew my date of conception and called at 4 weeks and they scheduled me for 10 weeks. This time, they brought me in at 5 weeks for blood work because I was on the pill and had a normal period 2 weeks before positive tests. I return at week 8.
  • I think that is all standard procedure, especially if you do not have any underlying medical conditions. However, I do think you should insist on the blood hCG, just to confirm the pregnancy (for your peace of mind) and estimate of how far along you are. Still, I would want the blood test!

Totally normal to have to wait until 10 weeks. I was 10 weeks when I met with my OB with my first. I went in at 7 weeks just to do blood work and fill out forms.

I go in at 7 weeks Monday for blood work and forms again and anticipate they will schedule me again at 10 weeks for the OB.

  • My doctors office surprised me when I called today, they said I could come in next thursday (I will be 5wks then), but I asked for the following week. She does an ultrasound/blood work/urine test and I don't want to have the u/s too early and not see a hb (happened with my first baby and it was so scary, only to find out we were too early).
I do think it's more common for the you to go in after 8wks if not later.

  • I had blood work, hormone levels checked, and a pap at 5 weeks (with a nurse at my obgyn's office). My first ultrasound is today at 7 weeks 1 day. I won't see my actual obgyn until 10 weeks (so the first week of Nov). I am due June 3rd! First baby :)
Morning sickness (more like all day sickness) is kicking my butt :(
  • Went in yesterday for my first appt (6w6d) where we just chatted about birthing philosophies and took blood for all sorts of tests and scheduled my ultrasound for next Friday (7w6d) since she said she'd do one right then but if I could handle waiting, I'd see much more in a week.  So excited!

  • I won't actually see my OB until 12 weeks (although I did have blood work done and saw the nurse practitioner already, and I'll have an early u/s in 2 weeks). But it's because he's going on vacation. My first pregnancy, I would have been so annoyed because I felt like there were not enough doctor's appts for me (the most exciting thing in my life)! Now I'm fine with it because I have to make arrangements for my baby every time I go now. Ha, ha.

If they didn't do blood work, then you should at least make sure you know your blood type. If you have any bleeding (not necessarily an m/c) and you are Rh-negative, then you'll have to get Rhogam.

  • My first appointment, blood work, will be at 10 weeks then ultra sound at 12. I'm going crazy not getting 100% answers right now. This is my first and I have no idea what's right and what's not. Doesn't help I have no pregnancy symptoms! Freaking out! 7 weeks and trying to be patient.
  • My OB saw me at 6 weeks. We did a urine test then ultrasound. We got to see little one's gestational sac but couldn't see him/her just yet. I go back in next week for another ultrasound and some blood work.
  • Lol I'm getting my hcg, progesterone, cbc and vitamin levels on Friday... So we can be sure if I need any extra supplementation. Then I have my first ultrasound with my midwife next month at 8 weeks (which is considered early).
  • At my job. We have the patient vome in and confirm. Sometimes we will have them do a viability sono just too see how early. Typically its a dating unltrasound something at 5-7 weeks.
  • My OB had me come in as soon as I got a BFP. She did urine sample and drew blood then had me come back two days later to retest to make sure HCG is going up. I am high risk though...first ultrasound at 8 weeks. It is nerve racking but I almost prefer waiting it out until 10 weeks or so before going in.

First tri, and most of second tri is a lot of hurry up and wait. At this point even if something does happen, there really isn't anything they can do anyway, its usually due to a genetic abnormality. And, there isn't a whole lot to detect. With DD we didn't hear her heartbeat on the doppler until 12 weeks, but my OB did a dating scan/confirmation so we got to see it at 9 weeks. Believe me, one day you'll blink and it'll almost be their first birthday. I joke that I'm still trying to absorb my BFP from April of last year.

    This!
  • I received 2 BFP's, and went to my PCP for the blood test, which was positive. I'm now in the process of trying to find a doctor and having a very hard time because of the state insurance plan I have. I've spent HOURS looking, and I've only found one office that accepts my insurance, as does the hospital they deliver at. They can't get me in until January. Trying not to panic, but I was silly in thinking I had the luxury of choice, so I got ratings of all of the doctors in my area and went from there. Now I'm being faced with not only do I not have a choice, but I might be lucky to get in to a doctor before 4 months! Add to that I quit smoking and came off my anxiety/depression meds right away, and I'm a mess!!
