What do you think of the name Fernley for a girl?

My husband and I really like nature names and came across Fernley for our little girl. My husband is in love with it! I've never heard it used though and am curious what others think. Is it more masculine or feminine sounding? Do you like it or is it too obscure?

Re: What do you think of the name Fernley for a girl?

  • Fernley is a big no.

If you like nature names there are tons of great ones, like:

    Ivy
    Flora
    Fern (without random -ley ending)
    Aurora (like the northern lights)
    Luna
    Willow

Plus many more that I can't think of at the moment.

Adding Lyn/ley to names is generally a big no and a big no here. Fern is fine and unique enough by itself.

    I also like

    Flora
    Dahlia
    Winter
    Rosa
    Daphne
    Aurora
    Hazel
    Holly
    Magnolia
    Olive
    Pearl

  • Yeah I don't care for Fernley at all, but Fern is nice.

  • Fernley to me brought to mind Fern Gully.

Fern is ok. If it's the sound you like maybe consider Leah as a middle name or felicity as an alternative
  • I dislike Fernley but quite like Fern.

  • I don't like Fernley or Fern for that matter.  There are lots of nice nature-inspired options, those aren't it.

  • I love Fern... hate Fernley.
  • I'm sensing a common theme here :) Thank you ladies for your feedback!
  • Fern is awesome. Fernley is made up and makes it look like you're trying to hard to be youneek.

  • What does your husband think of just Fern? I have LOVED the name since I was a little girl and read Charlotte's Web. It's pretty and youthful without being too child-ish (I had an elderly neighbor named Fern and it suited her well too). I don't think I would side-eye Fernley as much as most made up names, but Fern is so much prettier in my opinion and doesn't need to be altered. :)
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • Fernley doesn't sound cute to me. It sounds kind of harsh, actually.  It also reminds me of the dopey landlord on Three's Company (Mr. Furley).
  • We love Fern from Charlotte"s Web but our last name is also 4 letters and ends in "n" which my husband is not so keen on. I don't mind though. Fernley is actually an old English name but I had concerns that it sounds made up too.
  • I don't like Fernley or Fern. Fernley sounds masculine to me. I don't think of a cute little girl at all when I hear that more like an old man.

  • I wish you could have seen my face when I read "Fernley."

    That's a no. Really not a fan.
  • Nope to fernley
  • If you really love it I would suggest Fern or Finley.

Although I think you can do better than either :)

  • I LOVE Fern. Love it. I really don't hate fernley at all - in fact I rather like it, not tons though - but it does kind of have that made up feel, even if it isn't. However, if you both love it, go for it.

  • LOVE Fern. I also love Charlotte's Web. How about Fern as first name with Leigh or Lee as middle name? That way you can use both of the sounds you like!

  • Finley would be better if you want something similar. For other outdoorsy name I like Ivy, Sage, Autumn, poppy or Willow?
  • I like Fern but agree Fernley is a big no

fernley isn't a nature name. Fern is. Fern is adorable. Fernley is just juvenile. Go with fern.
  • One huge fat NOPE! Fern is ok but NMS. Fernley is ridiculous..
