I can't sleep

My son is 9 days old & I'm having the hardest time sleeping. Everything I start to fall asleep he coos and my eyes shoot open. By the time I calm down he does it again. Is this normal? Will it get better as we get acclimated to one another?

Re: I can't sleep

  • My son is 6 weeks and my eyes will shoot open at every noise. Lol. It's part of being a new mommy! I haven't slept for than two hours since I gave birth. Coffee is my friend. I will say, even if my eyes don't open, I'm awake because I am more familiar with his sounds. It sucks though because it still wakes me, if I'm lucky enough to actually be asleep.

  • I definitely struggled with this as well, since I was so nervous and aware of his every movement and sound. My son is four weeks old tomorrow, though, and it was starting to affect my ability to function during the day, which I judged to be more unsafe than sleeping. Honestly? My solution has been headphones and classical music, turned down to the lowest volume. I can still hear him if he honestly needs me (louder grunting and the obvious cries), but it drowns out the cooing and soft fussing that he does to self soothe. I felt bad at first, but with a military husband who is on duty every third night, it was necessary for my sanity.

  • Exactly why our little guy has been in his nursery since week 2. Too noisy. We have a video monitor and a snuza hero clip on alarm to ease my sids fears and all has been great. Highly recommend.

I used a white noise machine but at the end of week 2 I couldn't eve sleep well with that. We moved her into our large walk in closet (which even has its own AC vent) that way she's near... just not too near. I slept so well that first night! It was amazing! ETA Pediatrician at her appointment today (5+ weeks) said it was time to start transitioning her to the.nursery and her own crib.
