Having a melt down

Well after having to switch to formula because I can't breastfeed it's not going good at all. He's been throwing up for days after he eats and the doctor told me to sit him up for 30 minutes after eats to help digest it and it's not working. He went from pooping 10 times a day to maybe once and they said its because of switching and now he's been non stop crying it seems. He slept on my chest the entire night last night and cried when I tried to put him down. I feel like I'm failing as a mom. I don't know how to help him and what's wrong, or if this is normal. I'm going crazy

Re: Having a melt down

  • I'm so sorry you're feeling this frustrated, it sounds really rough! I don't have any helpful wisdom to offer, just sympathy. It sounds like it's s bit of a rough transition but I'm sure it'll get figured out. You're not a bad mom, you're doing a great job figuring out how to best keep your baby fed. Hang in there!

  • You are doing great! The change in poop frequency is quite normal but I am sorry your LO is having trouble with the change. Babies bellies are so sensitive. You will figure it out, I know you can.
  • It's normal, my lo has had to change formulas 4 times already. My pedi said it can take up to 4 days to transition (not that this helps a lot) , so I wouldn't be too alarmed.

  • I don't have many suggestions bc I haven't dealt with this. But I've heard you can buy breastmilk from moms with an oversupply. Idk anything about it but it is probably worth looking into if he is having a hard time with formula. I'm sorry and I hope things get better soon!
  • Even though it's normal, that doesn't make it easier. If he continues to throw up after a few days, I'd ask the pediatrician if they have samples or coupons for different brands of formula you could try out. My sister's baby had a milk and soy allergy, along with eczema that was worse depending on his diet, and she had to try a countless number of formulas before finding one that was right for them. It was frustrating and emotional for her, but with persistence she made it. That doesn't make it easier, but you are doing what you can and the fact it upsets you that this is hard on baby shows what a good mama you are!!!

  • First, you're not a failure as a mom. The fact that you care and that you even feel that way in the first place proves that you're not. Sometimes our LOs like to challenge us. It will all be okay.

It is completely normal for this type of rough transition, and ditto the pp who said it can take up to 4 days. Are you using a formula designed for sensitive tummies? That might be a good route to go. Also, how much formula are you giving him? I've never breastfed, but I know that it can be tricky to track how much babies have eaten. Perhaps he's taking more formula than he was breast milk?

Hang in there...it will get better.

  • Try switching bottles. We had to go through three different types of bottles to find one that worked well. Your baby may be spitting up because he's drinking too fast. We had to find a bottle that my guy couldn't chug in two minutes. The faster he drank it of a bottle, the more likely he was too throw it all up.
  • Try preemie or slow flow nipples!
  • @jweber4747 what one did your baby end up liking?
  • You're not failing!  Babies are unpredictable!  Please don't feel that way.

What kind of formula are you using?  I've had to switch several times and my baby is only 3 weeks old.  First similac regular, then breastfeeding supplement, then non-gmo, then enfamil...I could go on and on.  We finally found one that works (Enfamil Gentlease) but it was horrible to see her in pain from gas or throwing up in the meantime.

Mine is also going through a phase where she just will NOT be put down.  It's normal.  You'll get it!  Hang in there!
  • We've had good success with Gerber Good Start Gentle formula and Dr Brown's natural flow bottles.

Good luck. You'll find something that works for your baby! We're all doing trial and error on what works best for our babies! You're not alone.
  • I don't have much to add, just mostly agreeing with PP. You're not a bad mom at all because a bad mom wouldn't care.

My LO is doing well on Similac Sensitive. I lucked out this time with the first formula. My DS1, not so much. I think we had to try 4 or 5 different kinds until we found the one that was the least problematic. Also, I totally agree with the bottles! We just changed to MAM bottles and I can't say enough great things about them. It's worth it to spend the money to try a few different ones and find what is best for you LO. Good luck mama! It will get better.

  • @bbudden92 how are things? Better I hope! Hang in there. I was there last week. I'm BF(I'm not a big producer and we have to use a nipple shield, too) but had to switch formula because son was gassy and in pain! We tried gas drops, and they seem to help short term. Once we switched, several days later, LO was feeling normal again. Poop's about every 48 hours. My only issue is he has to try to poop SO hard...almost seems constipated?? Once he goes, it's a massive blow out diaper. Up the back and all. One time the poop was kinda hard and very thick! Yikes! Idk if this means I should switch formula again? Ugh. Thoughts?!
  • I had to supplement with formula for two days and same thing happened to my LO. Suddenly no poops and barely any pee. I'm back to BF. Doc said that it takes the GI track a bit to adjust to a switch. Hopefully this is temporary. Hang in there it is extreme frustrating I know.
  • Dr Brown's bottles have been working the best for us.
  • I kind of understand how you feel, I had to switch to formula cause after 2 1/2 weeks, I wasn't producing. It was hard for me, I felt like I was failing him. And I understand things happen, with my daughter I breastfed for 6 months. Every pregnancy/baby is different, and my second baby was proof of that. I use tomme tippe bottles, and Members Mark Infant formula from Sam's.
