Re: Breastfeeding help!!!

  • I'm so sorry you are worried. Trust me this is so normal!!! It's totally normal that you have to wake her up to eat. Try to get her wide awake by taking off her blanket, changing her diaper even if it's not dirty. You can also tickle her feet. Stimulate her to open her mouth by using your nipple. Rub it from her nose and down her lips. This should make her open her mouth eventually. You can also squeeze some colostrum or breastmilk out of your nipple and do the same thing. Do these things every 2-3 hours even if she's sleeping. Your milk will eventually come in. Remember breastfeeding is all about supply and demand. Keep it up mommy, you are doing a great job and remember baby girl is learning too! You should also look for local resources. You can contact the hospital you delivered at and get in touch with a lactation consultant or a local La Leche League.

If she is pooping and peeing regularly and eats well when she does eat then it is fine. The "schedule" is different for every baby. If you are concerned, find a Lactation consultant or a breastfeeding support group. Just relax and time her instead of watching the time. I think you will find that she has her own schedule. :)
  • Totally agree with what's been said. The first day my baby girl slept 9 hours only 2 hours post delivery and slept 5-6 hours between feeds the second day. Then only started demanding a lot more than I was producing so I would make her suckle both breasts for an hour before I topped her up with formula. It was hectic because it was eat, poop, sleep non stop for 24 hours then my milk came in. She sleeps 3-5 hours but drinks alot and is only awake 15 minutes to feed. But I think the sleeping a lot has something to do with jaundice which she's had since day 3, she's now 2w1d.
  • My baby doesn't do anything on a schedule and that's totally normal! I didn't feel like she was eating a lot those first few days. Now she eats nonstop (at least that's how it feels). To try and wake her up I would take off her diaper and do skin to skin or use one of those boogie wipes to clean her face and that usually woke her up.
  • I agree with everyone but I would just be careful. I couldn't get my baby up to eat and at her 3 day appt she had lost so much weight they got worried and she had to have blood test to make sure she was getting all the essentials. She came back ok but they had me supplement with formula and do weight checks with her.
  • Be careful about supplementing though. The demand is how our body knows to produce more. Lots of skin to skin time, even if baby is sleeping, will help boost supply.
  • I feed on demand, baby is 6 days new. Yesterday she slept from 5am until midnight. ALL DAY I had to keep waking her up to eat and she wouldn't eat too long.
My midwife said early on, sometimes they sleep alot not eating enough ad in turn become more sleepy then start to loose weight so it can become an issue that way. But newborns also can sleep up to 20 hrs easy in one day, and that in itself can make feedings more of a challenge.
Hang in there, I only got 5 feeds in by day 2 and my midwife was a little nervous, but she improved each day following that.
  • Also, if you are open to it, if she is still sleeping beyond the 2-3 hour mark since her last feeding, you could always pump to build up the supply and demand as well. That's what I did with my son....he slept so much during the day for the first couple of weeks, then together we figured out his schedule. It takes time, lady! Hang in there :)
  • I hate that hospitals push this "schedule" on you bc it can cause stress. When I was at the hospital I was so focused on the stupid sheet that I was starting to worry. I say eff the schedule but as all the mothers day as long as she's pooping and peeing more then 3times you're okay momma! Once your milk starts flowing you'll be good. Rome wasn't built in a day :) don't give up
  • Thank you so much ladies for all your advices!! I really appreciate it and feel better about it now that I know it's normal for her not to have a schedule
  • @riosv i bumped the breastfeeding thread we've had going for a while. It's full of great information and links.
  • It's hard to get a newborn on a schedule. As long as she is eating and is pooping and peeing, she is fine. Also keep in mind that this will change. Some days your little one will seem like she's starving, and other days she may not seem like she is eating hardly anything. If you are worried, contact your lactation specialist at your hospital and set up an appointment. Remember you cannot get enough help! I know it can be frustrating. Right now my 3 week old has been going through a growth spurt ( gained a pound in less than one week), and she is eating way more than I can produce right now. We are having to supplement formulas, so I can build up my supply. She is eating around 6 oz every 2 hours. And, last week she hardly ate at all, so don't worry yourself too much. A newborn will get all the nutrients that they need. I apologize for the rant (I've been frustrated about breastfeeding as well, just with the opposite problem). Keep it up, and it will get easier!
