movement question?

When does movement typically start to decrease? Tomorrow I'm 34 weeks. I've noticed as time moves on its the exact opposite of what the doctor and pamphlets and what not has been saying. He's moving around a lot more and it's way bigger stronger almost painful movements. It makes me feel like he's this huge strong baby in a tiny way to small space. At each of my appts I get asked about the kick counting but I honestly don't need to keep records. He's moving constantly!!! It's also scaring me thinking this kid is never going to sleep!

Re: movement question?

  • My ob said about 36 to 38 weeks for drop but also that the drop can happen quickly too. As long as he's kicking ur fine, my ob said dont stress about kick count just.focus on movement. My bub changes every day, some days quiet some days insane and different sorts of movement too.

I was told as long as I feel him move 4 times in an hour after I eat a meal, then everything is okay.

ETA: I wasn't told when he'll slow down movements, just the usual, some days he might not be as active.

Im 36w2d and he moves ALL the time. My OB even asks how are the "aggressive" movements coming since thats the word I used to describe the kicks. DH has some ADD so it was expected. God help me.

Edited because I am not 37 weeks. I wish though!
  • I'm 37 wks 4 days and he hasn't slowed down at all
  • Also 37w2d here and he has yet to slow down.

  • 37w1d here and all he seems to do is punch and kick. I would try not to worry about it!

  • Your babies movements should not decrease! If you notice a decrease in fetal movement. You should ring your ob straight away as this could be a sign of something serious. As your baby runs out of space their movements may become slower because of their cramped conditions but they should still be moving the same amount! I worry everyday that his movements are decreasing, this can be a symptom of a placental abruption or something happening to the babies cord, usually just as I'm about to freak out he starts wiggling about like normal, but make sure you keep an eye on your babies movements and know what's normal for them! All babies are different and some are way more active than others, if your baby usually moves 50 times an hour but you notice this decrease to 10 don't automatically think your okay because the count the kicks app says it's fine, you know when there's something not right with your baby!
  • ^^^this. Your baby should be moving right up until labour and even in labour (harder to concentrate on it at that point though)!
  • I agree with @carajadep, my midwife told me he shouldn't really slow down, and that changes in normal should be reported. For example, they say 10 in an hour is good, but my baby gets to 10 in about 2 minutes, so if it took an hour there would be something wrong! I think the difference is you may start feeling more wiggles and flexes, rather than flips and kicks, not that there will be less movement.

Also important to report is dramatic increases in movement, if baby is usually pretty chill and then it's all of a sudden freaking out, you may want to be checked, something could be up and it's better safe than sorry
  • Yesterday, at my ob appointment, I was told at 36 weeks movement can feel less - but I haven't experienced this yet
  • Seconding others that movement frequency shouldn't decrease, but type of movement could change.  When DS ran out of space in the last trimester, the movements went from less of a sharp punch/kick/headbutt/crotch shot to more of a stretching/pushing/rolling sensation. Still the same frequency, just a different sensation.  Same with this LO.  Sensation of movement is definitely starting to change.
