Contractions in first trimester???

OK sorry if this is TMI. But I got hit with a huge surprise last night. I'm 4 weeks along so very early. My husband and I were intimate last night and mid-climax it began to hurt like crazy. My lower back, my uterus, my lower abdomen, my cervix. I immediately thought we did something wrong. I didn't have any blood or anything. So while I sat in pain I decided to look it up and sex can trigger contractions no matter what phase of pregnancy you are in. A heating pad set to low helped soothe it. It didn't go away for hours. It was only "severe" for a couple minutes then pretty mild for a couple hours. Has anyone else experienced this? I am a first time mom so this was a HUGE surprise.

I'm 4 weeks tomorrow and have been getting dull achy cramps for the past 2 days. From what I can find, its totally normal since the uterus is accommodating a very small guest and changing to make everything that needs to be made.

As far as orgasm, it releases oxytocin which does trigger contractions. Sex is generally considered safe during pregnancy but I would definitely mention it to your doctor to make sure you're good to go.

Eta- I missed the part about them not going away for hours. That part isn't normal. I would call your doctor to make sure its all good.

  • I'm probably not the best person to give advice on this since I've never experienced that, but it doesn't sound like a normal contraction to me. I think normal contractions in the first trimester that are triggered by orgasm are less painful, if they hurt at all, and they don't take hours to go away. I think you should really call your doctor. Severe pain is a concern.

  • Thanks a lot. I'll give her a call. I figured since they went away it was fine.just wanted to be sure.
  • So I called the doctor and she said that in early pregnancy intercourse an orgasm can make the uterus contract and that's what it probably was. The only other possible scenario would be a cyst bursting and fluid getting out. Either way if the pain had lasted through today or if I had experienced bleeding that would have been a concern. So FYI if anyone else has this happen.

Thanks for the update, seeing a resolution to these types of questions is always good!  I'm glad that everything seems to be okay, fx it stays that way!
  • I'm glad to hear that. Here's hoping it doesn't happen again! That's no fun.
