1st Trimester

How soon is too soon?

To start stocking up and getting babies room ready. I am 9wks and 3 days today. So far a healthy pregnancy but my first I miscarried around 7 weeks. I am hesitant to even write in my pregnancy journal that I bought yet because at first I was afraid of another MC.

I am feeling great this time around and have so much I wish I could start doing. Like start to convert our office for what will be the babies room, stocking up on little things now, etc. just wanted to get some opinions from others on when they plan to start this type of stuff or if you have already.

Re: How soon is too soon?

  • I'm in the same situation. I'm 9+4... I MC'd my first at 8 weeks. I'm waiting to buy anything until the second tri.

  • I bought a crib when I was 8 weeks but I bought it from a friend and didn't set it up. I'm at 21 weeks now and getting the stuff painted and ready to go in. I would honestly wait until you find out what you're having (if you're not team green). Around 18 weeks you'll still feel good and you can go into the store more prepared.

  • I'm 14 weeks and bought my crib....wait for it....4 years ago!  Ha!  I found a killer deal on a $1,600 crib and knew that my time would come one day, so I stored it in the attic.
As for purchasing other things, I'm holding off until after the 20 week sonogram (when we can hopefully determine the sex).  At that point I'll feel more comfortable buying things I need/want, as well as painting and starting to get the nursery ready.

Haha! That's great. Smart thinking though. I'm sure you're glad you bought it way in advance now. And yeah I think I'll wait til we find out the sex of the baby and I'm atleast out of the first trimester. It's just so hard waiting. I'm excited!
  • I'm only 6 or 7 weeks now, but I'm already grabbing a package of size 1,2 or 3 diapers when i go to the store - but I already buy diapers for my son so..... I just know that those are something that you need ALOT of and are expensive, so I'm stocking up now to help out later. Word to the wise - don't buy more than 1 pack of newborn diapers to start, and don't open the package. My son was in newborns for ONE week before he went to size 1 and I had opened a couple packages and "prepped" the nursery with them stashed everywhere. I ended up giving those to my friend who hadn't had her baby yet, and was able to exchange the other boxes I had for size 1's, but you just never know if your LO will fit in them for long or not. If you do end up needing preemies or newborns for longer, the hospital will cover you for a couple days, long enough for your SO/mom/friend whoever to run out and grab you some more.

  • Thanks. That's a good idea. Yea diapers are expensive that's why I really want to start getting some here and there to avoid dropping tons of money on them later. I'm going to try to wait til I'm 12 weeks and then start my stock. @NLewis1
  • I am 12+5 today and thinking the same, but I might just wait till the holidays for sales :) at least on the big stuff. Small stuff i might just wait till after the baby shower.

Very true. Which leads me to my next question.. When is it appropriate to have the baby shower? At how many months? I'll have to fly home for mine so I know I don't want to push it last minute. Thoughts?

All the baby showers I've been to have been in the 3rd trimester but different weeks with in that. If you're flying there's a cutoff for when it's okay.
  • I have to fly for my shower so I'm going to have it very late in the second trimester. Otherwise, I think most do it at around 30wks
  • With DD we waited until 12 weeks. We are doing the same this time around too.

  • Almost 14 weeks and haven't bought a thing. Eek
  • 16 weeks and haven't bought anything. Don't plan to for awhile, either.
  • Our office/future nursery has also become our room to throw random crap in so I've started to clean it out a bit and figure out where everything in the room will eventually end up but other than that, we haven't bought anything baby. I'm also super early in, 4w3d, so buying things at this point is a bit early. I do plan to wait until at minimum after the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks to buy things if only to be able to purchase items in the proper color scheme.
  • I bought stuff at about 6 weeks.  The consignment store down the street was having an $11 bag sale.  I couldn't pass it up.  But I knew the emotional risk. But I already have baby clothes passed down from my cousins several years ago who couldn't get rid of their favs.  I told myself if anything happened, I would donate them to the children's shelter.
  • A lot of women wait on baby showers until after the point of viability, which would be 24 weeks. It's a personal choice. Do you know when the person hosting your shower was thinking of having it? You should be able to work with them on dates and travel restrictions.

I lurk. I snark. I offer sound advice if you're not BSC. You may not like me. I'm okay with it.

  • I'm 6 weeks and 6 days, and we started collecting things (not buying) before we were even actually trying because we knew that we were going to have children, even if it took us a while. We bought a 3br house and an SUV to have room for a family. We collected, from Freecycle and friends, a crib, changing table, Moses basket, diaper genie, and breast pump. Now that I'm pregnant, we're getting the room that will be the nursery painted and are going to set it up. We want to send the Universe a clear message that we are ready for our healthy baby (I've had multiple miscarriages) and are saving money by starting early. I have been afraid to wrote in my baby journals too, but am forcing myself to act on my dreams rather than my fears.
  • @lolalovesdc that's awesome. Great way to think positive. I know I haven't touched my journal yet due to past miscarrying also but I think tonight might be a good day to start. Best of luck to you and baby!
  • @lisamom86 I can't imagine waiting til after baby is born. That's a long wait and I like to get a head start on things! Lol. However I understand that certain people have beliefs about things of that nature which is totally understandable. Im just not that patient! @-)
