Sleeping/upper back troubles

Hello ladies! So I am 27.5 weeks along and have been having a lot of upper back pain, right between my shoulders. I use a snoogle, on top of many other pillows. The last 2 nights the back pain is so bad that I have a hard time moving and/or catching my breath. I'm almost wondering if it has to do with sleeping, or the lifting I do at work? What worries me is that it is consistently getting worse every night. I was up the majority of the night last night because of this pain. In my last pregnancy I only had the lower back/hip pain.

Has anyone else had the upper back pain? How do you manage it at night?

Re: Sleeping/upper back troubles

  • Sounds like a trapped nerve or pulled muscle, probably caused by lifting. Back pain caused by sleeping tends to manifest itself as a dull ache for me, whereas the above is more of a sharp stabbing pain that takes your breath away. Maybe try some gentle yoga and use a natural heat lotion (like a natural version of deepheat) to ease the pain. Forever Living do a great one called Forever Heat Lotion or something like that, you can use it everywhere except the bump and the hips. I use it and it's brilliant. When you're pregnant all your ligaments loosen, not just the ones in your pelvis, so back pain not related to the growing baby can certainly happen. Best of luck and hope you can get some sleep. I use a pregnancy pillow which really helps. I'm not sure what a snoogle is but it sounds adorable haha!

Thanks for this! I do a lot of lifting and standing at work. The pain I've been having hasn't been the typical pregnancy back pain. I've debated going off work a little early because of the lifting. If it keeps getting worse I may not have a choice.

Snoogle is a long snake shaped pillow. I may be saying it wrong? lol!

  • I have pain in a very similar spot, I think maybe it could be caused simply by my boobs having grown so much and my belly, my back isn't strong enough to hoist this weight around all day. Haha!
  • I feel like my problem is because I'm sleeping on my side. I'm normally a belly sleeper, so I have obviously had to change that. My boobs haven't grown too much sadly. So it can't be because of them! lol!! I just hate it. I've started to use a heating pad when I get home from work on my upper back, and it seems to be helping!
