Swaddle frustration. Please help!!!

My LO is not even two weeks old yet. He is 11lbs and gets out of the swaddle within 5 minutes. I've used the swaddle plus and wrap him up pretty tight but within minutes he is free, awake, and crying. He has woken up 3xs already tonight upset because the swaddle is all over the place. I found it over his face this last time which freaked me out. I have a swaddle sack he likes that keeps him tight but it is too hot and he wakes up drenched in sweat.

Not sure what to do. He loves the swaddle and won't sleep without it but he is crazy strong for a 1.5week old. I'm afraid he'll hurt himself with the thing or worse yet, never sleep again. Sigh.

  • My little guy is 11 lbs and pretty strong, too. He started busting out of his swaddle on day three or so, as well, but won't sleep without it. I use the Summer Swaddle Me wraps with the Velcro, and just wrap/tuck it under his arms. I use the cotton material ones so he doesn't get too hot. He has the security of the tight wrap but his arms are free! The Velcro is pretty strong, he hasn't been able to unwrap himself so far.

  • This is probably a stupid question but have you tried swaddling him with his arms out? Sounds like he wants them free but wants the swaddle too. Also, I agree with pp, the cotton summer swaddle wraps are really nice and worth a try.
  • Look at woombie swaddles, they have a version with a vent in the front to avoid over heating.
  • @jbettles I was looking on Amazon and these look great. Not sure what size to get. What size are you using for your LO.

@gollygeeitsamy yeah I've tried that but he doesn't like it. If I leave his arms out he gets the wrap off even faster. He moves his arms a lot and keeps sucking on them or hitting his face.

@dmbfan46835 looked at these on Amazon but folks complained of them running tight on 8lb babies.
  • Another suggestion for swaddle me w/Velcro and woombie. You caN order woombie in size large. My daughter loves them.
  • Just Checked buy buy baby for woombie in large. They carry it!
  • @Atlasmom the small/medium size would probably work for now. I bought some larges the other day (baby is 13+ lbs) and they're way too big, he can wiggle out of them. The small/medium seems too small but I can still get the Velcro fastened and he doesn't get out, so I guess it's still good.
  • Swaddle up is great too.
  • The Miracle Blanket will keep his arms in, if that's what he prefers. I used them with my first because he loved being swaddled arms-in, but busted out quickly.

Have you tried using this technique with the separate blanket inside? I found flannel receiving blankets work really well.

I do this with a muslin blanket when the Summer Swaddle Me's aren't working.

  • I have the small/medium, I believe! Some have been passed among several babies and I can't find a size on them, but they're not huge!

  • Thank you everyone for the great suggestions.

@MiromiM love the video. Giving this a try until the swaddles I ordered on Amazon come in.

I do this but with a summer swaddle me on the outside instead of a normal swaddle blanket. Works like a charm!
  • Here's a pic using a summer swaddler

    I might try that sometime.

Also, who are these happily swaddled babies!? Mine is so fussy during the process but eventually settles down.

  • @Atlasmom the woombie has 2 different sizes. Newborn up to 13 lbs and then for bigger babes up to 19 lbs. just FYI. The newborn is def too small for my little man but the bigger size is great and he's 9 lbs and 22 inches long.
