Shaving....before labor? Possible tmi.

I am being induced Monday, for medical reasons (high amniotic fluid). So I have time to plan my grooming...

Any Mommas who have had their babies yet or who haven't, what are you planning on doing?

I am normally shaved, and planned to do so the night before, but it just hit me. I haven't worn a pad since I was 12. The thought of wearing a pad, the blood, possible stitches (my OB likes to cut...so I've heard) and then the itchy of it growing back in while not able to shave for a few weeks is making me cringe.

Are you shaving, did you shave? Let's hear it! :)

Re: Shaving....before labor? Possible tmi.

  • I knew I was being induced 48 hours before my induction so I cleaned up (didn't fully shave) that night so the itchy part was almost over when I was induced. I labored for 23 hours so by the time I had stitches and the mess after delivery I was a few days post shaving. I am now two weeks without shaving and while it's driving me crazy there's no way I would think about shaving. Maybe cleaning up my bikini line a bit but not going down there with a razor any time soon. Still swollen and way sensitive.

  • They generally ask you not to, actually, to avoid any complications from nicks.

That being said, I did with my first and the itchy feeling of it regrowing along with everything else was awful. This time I'm cutting myself off from shaving at 39 weeks. My hubby volunteered to use the clippers I use to cut his hair and one of the comb fittings so that the hair is short but not shaved. I think it'll be better that way, at least for me.
  • I'm a larger woman so I've always had to shave by "touch" bc it's pretty difficult to see it all. Being this pregnant has only made it worse. That being said- I've gone about my normal routine since I'm used to going by touch. Well now I regret it. Due to lack of being able to bend enough I've managed to cut myself down there for the first AND second time ever! A few days ago I literally had to play the game, "Did I just cut myself or did I just lose my mucous plug and get the bloody show?". It was a mess. I think the second time was me re-opening the cut from the first time.

All that being said- I'm being induced Monday and I think I'm done for now. Better safe than sorry.
  • I wouldn't shave it. I mean I'm more comfy with it being a bit longer and just knowing how much healing I'll be doing down there, I can't imagine having razor burn and itchy growing back hair. I think I've heard it's best not to shave in the last few weeks so there is little room for infection.
  • Not worth it. I work in healthcare. The doctors and nurses really don't care how groomed you are down there.
  • My doctor said our hospital policy is no shaving or waxing after 36 weeks. I was told this at my 36 week appointment. It keeps down the risk of infection.

Same here they said no shaving after 36 weeks cause of infection. Luckily it's not two bad down there plus I haven't seen it for months so doesn't really bother me, out of sight out of mind lol.
  • I shaved the night before. I was only 38 weeks so I thought it would be my last time and I had to be induced the next day. It wasn't itchy or anything healing but I get more itchy when I'm not shaved down there.
  • I just delivered Monday and I would definitely say DONT SHAVE... I always get very bad bumps and itching when I shave...I had my fiance' trim it last week with his clippers so that I wasn't too hairy...the nurse shaved it with an electric razor before my emergency c section and I am so thankful I haven't felt the slightest itch or bump just a very swollen area....you won't be ad uncomfortable as you think...Lol she was quick too....I told my fiance he should have stayed and watched her bc he takes his time too much time she was in and out haha....good luck momma
  • I normally just use a trimmer anyway, since I tend to get bad razor burn. So, that is my plan prior to birth, trimming and then I won't have to worry about itchiness!

  • I am 40+5, I used trimmers the day before I was due. I'll probably trim again this weekend. It's been 1976 down there for the last three months. I know nobody at the hospital really cares, it's just a self consciousness thing, so im not thinking 'what are they thinking', so I groomed a little. I'm sure it looks terrible since I can't see anything

  • I am 39 weeks 1 day, I used a trimmer over this past weekend and got it trimmed down pretty short. I am usually a clean shaver, so I wanted it to be tamed but not bald so as not to risk infection and I figured by doing it last weekend it would give it time to grow back just a bit to avoid the grow back itch!
  • Ahh! Thank all of you ladies for your answers!
I think I'm just going to not. Haha!
It sounds wayyy more awful being shaved then being fuzzy for the first time ever!

Now, I can't imagine how my razor or tub is going to look in a few weeks! HAHAHAHA
  • I attempted to a week ago. I did it tho! Took forever and a day it seems. My poor feets were blue and purple by the end of my shower haha told my BF that's the last of that until further notice. Baby will be here in 9 days or less. So honestly, it don't be that bad. By the time you are birthing all your thoughts on how stuff is down there goes out the window!
  • I did before DD and will again before I give birth to DS.  *I* just feel better.  I get that the doctors and nurses don't care.  *I* do.  In the midst of all the gross, knowing my legs and lady bits are shaved and groomed just makes me feel human again.  Same reason I just got a manicure and will be going for another pedicure before induction next week.

  • After going through labor and delivery, I think I would suggest not shaving. It's gonna be a mess down there no matter what you do and modesty just goes out the window. I can't imagine the added itchiness on top of the itching that comes with recovery! I just trimmed down there and let it be.

  • I had a waxing appointment set for the day after I ended up delivering. I agree with @anorthro it's a mess down there and it's already uncomfortable so I wouldn't want to add to any discomfort
