Registry Question: Humidifiers?

I have searched this but nothing is coming up. Is there a reason that almost every registry checklist (no matter how minimal) insists on humidifiers? I understand the need if you are in a drier climate but if you are in a humid climate, I can't figure out why I'd need more humid air. Am I missing something?

Re: Registry Question: Humidifiers?

  • It's recommended a lot when babies get colds. We have one but we didn't buy it until she got sick for the first time. In hindsight I wished we had already had it at home.

  • @kristen2b Do you just use water for the cold or do use the "vicks vapor" type of product with it?
  • I actually use it more for me than with our kids. If it's dry in the air it helps keeping bloody noses away and static too. It's a good to have because eventually we all use it.... You can always wait too...

We use the "Vicks vapor type" it seems to clear up my daughter nicely. I definitely say buy one before the baby comes, especially with winter/cold season coming. I'd hate to be stuck at home without one.
  • Another use is if baby has eczema. This may come up for a lot of us with having winter babies. The furnace/heater dries the air out so you're adding that moisture back in.
  • I like humidifiers for when you have the heat on, I find it keeps you from getting that really dry winter skin.

I am a major humidifier person, I have serious allergies and sinus problems and proper humidity is super important for me. It's also super helpful for sick LOs. My personal favorite is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FWXJHS?colid=V7BQYAVT18LG&coliid=IKGZTT6KFUK6T&redirect=true&ref_=br_it_dp_o_nS_ttl&vs=1
  • We use an air purifier that also works as a humidifier. I found that on the nights we have it on it helps purify the air and my daughter sleeps better and wakes up less congested. So we have it every night. I've also used it if I had a cold and it helped. It's pricier than humidifiers but so worth it.

When she was a baby just the water. As she got older we did the vapor humidifier.
  • We use ours to help with the dry air but also as white noise in his room at night. Drowns out the house noises and is soothing to listen to.
  • Even in Houston we use one for Dom when he is ill. It helps out so much whenever he gets a cold. We have a cool mist as well as a Vicks one. The cool stays in his room and the Vicks is more for public areas where we can monitor it to prevent burns.

  • We love ours when our kids get colds however you can also put a bowl of water infront of the heating duct and get the same effect

    Thanks for all the answers!

I actually have allergies and asthma so I do use a humidifier in drier climates if I am sick in the winter. However, we just moved to a very damp/humid climate and we actually put it in storage because we couldn't imagine we'd need it here. The last super humid climate I actually never used it because the air stayed so moist that mold in window sills etc was a bigger concern then it ever getting dry.

Our heat here is also radiators not regular centralized vents. I will have to look at the air purifying versions, my allergies would probably love that, I've contemplated them before I just have never taken the plunge!

  • A cool mist humidifier is a must-have for when babies get stuffy noses/colds.  Don't buy a warm mist one, as they grow mold.  If you don't have one and your baby gets stuffy, go sit outside on a slightly chilly night, it will help them breathe.

Is there a purifier you really like?
