Boob Swap

DS is almost a month old now. He seems to be more efficient at nursing but also he's spitting up more. What's the best time to offer the other boob? Sometimes he'll pull off under 10 mins and I'll burp and put him back on the same boob. Should I be offering the other breast at that point? He almost never eats more at that point.

Re: Boob Swap

  • When I reoffer after burping and she doesn't take it, I burp again and offer the other side. If she doesn't take it either the we are usually done.

I think you're supposed to fully empty one breast before moving on to the next so baby is getting both fore and hind milk. The hind milk (that comes out after the fore milk) has more fat and keeps the baby full longer.

My baby usually spends about 10-15 minutes on one side (with a burp halfway through). If he starts to kick and hit and look frustrated I figure he's probably emptied that one and I move on to the next. Very rarely does he empty both. (He's 6 weeks.)
  • Maybe (probably) this is tmi but I notice my biome go flat when she's drained one side, at least I think so. I've had mostly an over supply issue so it's rare that she fully drains one (therefore rare that I swap sides during a feed) but today my supply had been a bit low and so I've noticed my nipples will go flat and she'll start to fuss so I switch to the other side. We've spent the day flip flop nursing lol.
  • My 5 week old has decided, as of today, to start screaming as soon as she drains the first boob. As soon as she is positioned to start the second she immediately looks up at me and calms down. So dramatic.
