Sprung a Leak...False Alarms?

Soo this morning I felt like I needed to pee, I stood up and it was like incontinence central. It was like that for an hour where if i pushed even a little or moved there was fluid. But im not seeing any blood and I dont even seem to be having contractions but I have no idea what my water breaking should feel like or what to expect. Is there any way to "test" or what was your experience?

Re: Sprung a Leak...False Alarms?

  • The only way to know is by going to the hospital. They can test the fluid

  • I had some smaller gushes that soaked a thin liner 3-4 times over a span of about 12 hours and called the doctor. They did tell me to come in to do the swab test, so I did and it was negative. She said it's pretty common for your discharge to change frequency and consistency towards the end and that's all mine was. She said it should gush and NOT STOP if it's water leaking or breaking.

My water broke last week and it barely trickled out for one panty liner, went to the dr and my water had indeed ruptured. Your water doesn't have to gush. Mine had been broke for 24hrs before i went in and they have to take special precautions then to reduce the risk of infection. I would recommend calling your dr office for peace of mind. Could be nothing, but if you are pretty far along I wouldn't risk not checking it out.

@Ljonas87 did you have any symptoms after your water broke that made you get checked? I had a small trickle this morning that soaked my undies, but nothing since. It was odorless. Definitely different than discharge I've had. I've been to l&d 3 times already for false contractions so I hate going in for another false alarm.
  • If odorless, that is what they say would be amniotic fluid. I can understand you feel self-concious for going in for false contractions before, but if your water truly has broken it would be good to know in order to manage your timeline. There is some concern of infection if the baby is not delivered reasonably soon after waters break.
  • With DD1 my water had been slowly leaking all day and I wasn't sure if it was discharge or fluid. It turned out to be fluid. Wouldn't even have filled a panty liner.
  • My water started gushing out this morning around 10. Called my midwife and went to see her...now I'm in the hospital getting ready to have my baby!

I'd call and go in to be safe!!
  • Put on a pad and lay down on your side for 45 min to an hour. When you stand up you should get some leaking if it is fluid since it would have built up in your lady business as you were laying.
  • Not to scare you but my cousin had a small rupture and barely leaked. It was her fourth baby so she wasn't overly concerned, just thought it was watery discharge. She had an appointment first thing in the morning and no other symptoms so she waited. Turns out in less than 12 hrs an infection already started. She had an emergency c section and the baby spent the first week in ICU. (The baby is a sassy five year old now and perfectly healthy!) Not that I think this will happen to you but I alway err on the side of caution. L&d would rather see you and send you home then have to deal any type of emergency:)

I didn't have any other symptoms and from my appt a few days before i still want dilated at that time. All that made me wonder was that the liquid didn't smell or look like pee. I know i was drinking a lot of water so my pee wasnt very yellow anyways. I honestly just googled it and decided it was better to be safe than sorry and called my dr office and they said i should come get it checked.
  • I just left L & D for possible fluid leak. The nurse took a sample and had the lab check it. Came back not a fluid leak and I'm closed up tight! Kind of disappointed I'm not dilated and my cervix is still way back. She had a hard time reaching it and actually made me bleed a bit trying
