Heavy lifting (50-80lbs)

I just found out I'm pregnant, two days before I even missed my period. I don't want to tell a bunch of people because of the high risks of miscarriage in the first trimester, but my job requires a lot of me physically. I routinely lift boxes that weigh anywhere between 60-80lbs, and trays that weigh 25-40lbs. I've read that so long as you were handling it fine before, you should be fine doing it while pregnant, but I haven't read ANYTHING about lifting OVER 50lbs. Theoretically, so long as I'm still doing it in a safe manner (though perhaps, a little slower now to avoid jerking) , it can't CAUSE a miscarriage, can it? It's small and well-cushioned by my body. Can I wait to worry about lifting until I'm showing, or is it dangerous even when it's not even bigger than a bean?

Re: Heavy lifting (50-80lbs)

  • I was working as an emt during the first half of my pregnancy with DD, I was lifting no less than 150 lbs a go and it wasn't an issue. I stopped when I popped because I could no longer safely balance stretchers and stair chairs

  • I have a role at my job in which lifting anywhere from 20 -100 lbs could be possible.  I was advised to put off these tasks until I was back from maternity leave.

However, it was an option for me to put off these tasks and not a requirement of my job.  I would definitely advise calling your OB to get a doctor's opinion on the matter.

    Congrats on the pregnancy!

  • And the general fear about lifting while pregnant isn't that it may cause miscarriage, it's that you're more likely to injure yourself, especially your back because all of your ligaments are loosening and your muscles shift around

  • Thank you JaymeeLH, that is comforting. Lifting just always seems to be the first thing people say you can't do, and I didn't know exactly why. I've worked with people that (despite a perfectly healthy pregnancy) refused to lift more than 20lbs because that's what traditional thinking told them, and so I did double the lifting each time, and I'm not gonna shove my work on someone else if I'm perfectly capable.
  • Yes what @JaymeeLH said! And if you were to say give your self a hernia you generally need to wait until after pregnancy to take care of it.
