Meds

Wanted to see how laxed everyone is with meds? I have to take benadryl a few times a week. And if I have a headache, I take tylenol. I don't feel bad about it. Both fine with my doc. However, its other people that make me feel paranoid/bad mom about taking anything. It would be great to be 100% "natural" but its just not in the cards for me. Also Im tired of feeling guilty for having a cup of coffee every morn. Ok end of rant.

Re: Meds

  • I tried really hard to suffer without meds in first tri but now I'm more lax. Plus I got the cold from hell last week so last week I took a lot of (dr approved) medications.

  • I take Tylenol if I really need it, but if I can help it, I don't usually take medications unless they're necessary anyway. If your doctor says Tylenol and coffee are fine, forget what random people say. My doctor told me everything (within reason) in moderation. You'll go crazy if you try to avoid every single thing that could potentially cause harm. Someone told me not to touch store receipts because whatever chemical is on them can cause miscarriage-- that's a little extreme for me, sorry. Listen to your doc and you'll be fine.

  • Agreed with PP. As long as it's dr approved, moderation is fine.

I tried not taking anything during my 1st tri but I take Tylenol and Zantac when needed. I have been taking a Zantac before bed to help with the morning puking and so far it seems to help.

I did have a cold about a month ago and took the recommended meds for it and thank god it worked.
  • I suffer from migraines. If I feel one coming on I take a tylenol its not really strong enough but it does mute it enough I can tolerate it. If I don't i'll be sick for two days and non functional. I try to avoid medicine until I cannot stand it any longer
  • I try to avoid meds, but I'm not a big med person either. When I feel bad, I usually just sleep it off so when I can that's what I do. If I start to feel a migraine come on though, I will immediately grab the Tylenol and head to the coffee shop for an espresso. I don't mess with those because mine start messing with my vision first, so if I'm at work, I'm terrified I'll have to drive myself home essentially blind to make it to bed.

  • I've gone med free this whole pregnancy, but have a horrible cold right now and started taking Tylenol to keep my fever down and doctor approved cough medicine to help me sleep at night. I'm going to avoid things as much as I can, but I also need to be functional and healthy to grow this baby.
  • I've taken Robitussin and cough drops to try and stave off my cold (I pretty much live on cough drops I think). I've also tried benadryl, sudafed, and I think some other to try and get rid of the post nasal drip and nothing works so I've given up and just suffer through it and keep the cough at bay with cough drops.
  • I have always been a big med taker. I've cut back a lot but am taking clariten daily now and occasionally a sudafed or Tylenol. I have severe sinus pain right now, but am trying not to take a sudafed.

I've also taken pepcid 2-3 times a week and tums galore.
  • I've taken Tylenol for headaches sometimes even though it barely touches them. I did rub a little ibuprofen cream on my hip this morning because it was killing me and arnica wasn't working. I felt guilty about that because ibuprofen is a no-no but I couldn't take it anymore.

  • I have bronchitis.. Tylenol and cough drops have been my saving grace

I hadn't heard that one. I have read that using hand sanitizer and then touching a thermal receipt can increase the BPA absorption by a lot, but I had heard that it can cause miscarriage.

  • I have crazy allergies, so there are some days when I take a Claratin or Zyrtec in the morning and then two Benedryl at night. Usually it's Ricola for post-nasal drip soreness/cough. l also take Tylenol once in a blue moon for a particularly nasty headache. I'm headache prone to begin with, so I tend to avoid medicating it unless it's really bad. As long as your doctor knows what is going on and gives you the thumbs up, you're good. Don't let other people make you feel guilty. Everybody is different and nobody has the right to tell you you're a bad mother!
  • I also suffer from migraines. I have to go to the ER almost every time. I lose my vision completely and almost fully in one eye every time. Medication is the only fix for me and I tried everything.

After my surgery I was on dilaudid and oxy which helped with the pain a million times over, nothing bad happened, in fact the opposite. Because I wasn't constantly in pain I was able to better nourish her and my baby grew much bigger and is ahead of her schedule.

I also have severe anxiety and taking Zoloft, which I am not afraid of sharing either. The benefits for me severely outweigh any risks and you are weened off before delivery. That prevents the baby from having mood swings, which is really the only side effect. Without going into too much detail, my perinatal depression was so bad because of fear and anxiety that I would have dreams of killing myself and the baby. Yeah, medicate me man cause I can't take that shit. My brain is way clearer.

So anyways, if this baby is growing perfectly healthy inside me with all these past medications, I think it's fine: really the scary thing is the lack of research because no one want to volunteer their child for studies with unknown consequences.

Ultimately every mom is right. You are okay with meds? You're right. You're against them? You're right. The only time a mother is wrong is when she forces her opinions or judges someone else. It's a preference call and it's your baby, so no matter what, YOU will be right.
  • Something to keep in mind is that the longer pain goes on and the worse it gets, the more medication it may take to get it under control. If you're not opposed to taking pain medication, there may be some benefit to taking it early instead of waiting for things to get really bad.

  • Risk vs. benefit; in some cases the results of not taking meds could be worse for baby than the results of taking meds.
  • There are so few doctor medications that are approved across the board, mainly because (at least in the US) regulations are so stringent.  Which means if you are taking a medication that is doctor approved, it most likely poses no threat (or very, very little) to your baby as long as you take the recommended dosage.  If it is approved and you need it, just take it as directed and don't stress.  There's no reason to beat yourself up over it.  I occasionally take Tylenol for headaches and drink at least one cup of coffee a day.  Baby is fine.

  • I've had to stay on my antidepressants throughout (Citalopram) after getting the ok from my doctor and midwife. I've taken Claritin once, but I've been trying to avoid meds that aren't necessary. So far so good!
  • I have had debilitating (sp?) migraines since I was a child, one thing that helps me if I rub some diluted peppermint oil on my temples and any area where its starting to hurt it usually calms it, just throwing it out there since I noticed there are a lot of us on here with migraines. Like PP said the longer the pain goes on the harder it is to ease it later so its better to nip it in the butt asap.

Where do you get the oil?
  • @thisusername You can buy it at any type of stores that sell organic and health products. I buy my oils wholsale by private suppliers because i'm an Esthetician and use them in clients' treatments but places like whole foods, trader joes etc usually sell essential oils just make sure the oil is pure and not mixed with anything else

When we weren't planning our expenses for baby I used to go to an acupuncturist and she is AMAZING! She used oils too and I'm thinking this may have been one of them. After seeing her I went to months without a migraine, before that I was getting them every 3 days. I just wish I could afford her permanently! Thanks so much for the oil suggestion! In a non drug addict way, it's hard not being able to take narcotics because that's all that has helped (besides Laura) . I don't like the super high and sleepy feeling but the pain! Ugh! I can't wait to try this! Well, I can wait, in fact I hope I never have to, but I'm eager to see if it will help me.
  • Doesn't hurt to try also just be careful when using oils. A little goes a long way as they are really strong
  • @mamacastro I do remember Laura telling me about that, she taught me how to use oils I just never found the ones she had and the ones I tried didn't work as well. Thank you for the warning though :)
  • The thought of putting the pills in my mouth make me gag. So I take nothing. I'm awful at forcing myself to even take my prenatals.

GUMMY PRENATALS ALL THE WAY!! Seriously when I was nearly dying from MS they helped so much. I can't do pill form. I use the one a day flavored ones. They're amazing.
  • I have lupus and was taken off all medication aside from two, and the occasional steroid if a flare gets too bad. Even though my perinatologist tells me it's absolutely necessary, the guilt still eats away at me every time I have to take my medication. just praying I won't have to leave her at the hospital to detox before taking her home. :(
