Best products for baby's skin?

I haven't thought of this in a while because I thought I might get most of this as shower gifts....but I only received a few items...so know I need to make some decisions. I got one bottle of Babyganics soap and a gift bundle of Johnson & Johnson products. I have heard some iffy things about J&J but I dont like to get caught up in hype & hysteria without solid info from a reputable source (most links I've seen are random blogs written by who-knows-who).
I am feeling unsure what products would be best to use on my baby - bath products, lotion, diaper cream. Especially since I have always had sensitive skin.
- Are J & J products okay (it's what my family always used)?
- Get more Babyganics?
- Aveeno Baby - b/c it's for sensitive skin?
- I hear lots about California Baby but my husband was not keen on those prices?
- Ive also heard of Aquafor, Up & Up brand, and Cetaphil Baby (I currently use Cetaphil for myself).

Then there is diaper cream - A/D, Desitin, Aquafor, Butt Paste...

Ahhh, I am feeling so overwhelmed which to choose! And I don't want to open the gifts I have received if I decide not to use them....but I want to get everything ready!

Re: Best products for baby's skin?

  • My family uses J&J and they stocked me up on Beudreaux (Sp?) butt paste. They swear that is the best diaper cream you can use. I also have Destin that I got with gift baskets. I really think its trial and error. Apply a little bit on baby's skin and see how he/she reacts to it before lathering them in it. I also have sensitive skin but have always been able to use J&J.

  • I've used mostly j&j or aveeno. Destin max, and aquaphor. However, every babies skin is different. If there is a reaction...switch to something else. Same goes for diapers/wipes/detergents, etc.
  • I'm glad to hear other use Johnson & Johnson. It was just my go to when I registered and my mom bought it for me because it is what she used. But I have some friends who are very 'organic' that really emphasize those expensive brands like California Baby or The Honest Company. So I have been feeling unsure. Then I saw those articles on J & J and I am not someone to get caught up in hysteria without having the facts but it made me start questioning everything again! Doesnt help that lately everywhere I go, someone recommends a different product to me that they love! Or maybe I just have too much time to think of these things as I wait for baby to make her appearance!
  • My husband is a toxicologist and does not have concerns about Johnson and Johnson. Like others have said, you have to figure out what works for your little one. My nephew had a horrible reaction to Honest Co diaper cream. It doesn't mean it's a bad product, but he must have a sensitivity to one of the ingredients. I'm starting out with Aveeno lotion/soap.
  • I really like California Baby Sensitive Skin. It may seem expensive but one hair/body wash bottle lasted probably 8 months. You only need one squirt for the hair and body each bath. I've also used Cetaphil Baby and Babyganics and like both of these brands. A&D ointment for every day preventation is the best. I apply every change. I've tried others & that is when the rashes started. My son has only had a couple of small rashes in 1 1/2 years. Butt Paste products work well if there is any redness developing (green tube). They make an extra strength (red tube) with 40% zinc ozide if there is a rash that's worsening. Aquaphor is great for dry skin patches, redness/ bumps and eczema. There are so many products, it can be overwhelming! You will find what works best for your baby.
  • I am going to use Weleda Calendula products. I want to go organic for as long as possible. I would definately not touch J&J since they're not very ethical, testing on animals etc.
  • I'll be using Aveeno products and I received most of what I requested on my registry. I myself use Aveeno products as I have sensitive skin and so I am sticking with what I know, but if for some reason it's not good for the baby, my second choice would likely be babyganics.
  • J&J (and by default Aveeno since they are owned by J&J) get a bad rap because at one point the had some harsh chemicals in them they swore they removed but never did. There was an issue with Mustela and California Baby as well - some talk about them not being truly natural or something like that.

Bottom line - you can find good and bad about everything so you just have to go with what you're comfortable with. Some mums are all about natural and some want baby to smell what they think a baby should smell like (J&J).

That said, I'm more of a natural mum, and my son has eczema, so I used coconut oil in the beginning and when he got bigger Babyganics and Burts Bees. I don't like perfumey scents so this was perfect for me. Now that he's 3 and his skin isn't so sensitive I switched to Shea Moisture products. I will probably go the same route with this one.
  • I found this site helpful: https://www.goodguide.com/
It was started by a professor of environmental and labor policy at the University of California at Berkeley and with the help of other expert chemists/scientist compiles ratings on thousands of products.
They also have an app you can download onto your phone and use while shopping by scanning bar codes. One thing I've found consistently is that there is no consistency on "healthy" ratings among brands. It is ridiculous. While a brand like Honest Co. says it uses only safe/non-toxic ingredients that's not true across the board for all its products. A shampoo they make may be great but the conditioner is terrible.
It's a lot of work to shop by item, but there's a lot of research out to support lessening exposure to chemicals for all of us-- especially newborns.
  • We didn't stock up on any products as first time parents. We are starting with babyganics after some good reviews from friends, if it works we will stick with it. If not, I will comeback and reread this post to find something else to try!! ;)
  • If you go to ewg.org they have a Skin Deep Database that rates everything based on what's in it. We love the Shea Moisture line, you can get it at Target, even grocery stores. It smells awesome and lasts a long time. Plus, the ingredients are safe.
  • We love ava Anderson products. But if your husband isn't keen on cali baby he won't like ava either. We also use babyganics, great stuff for a low price
