Day nap crap

DS is 3 weeks old now. He sleeps pretty good at night swaddled. But during the day, I'll get him down for a nap and he can't stay asleep. If he's in the stroller, he'll wake up the second it stops. Same goes for the car. I can't keep him swaddled all day, especially with it being 90 degrees out. He takes a binky but he'll wake up and cry the second it falls out. Anyone been here? Any advice?

Re: Day nap crap

  • Have you tried a swing? Our 2 week old loves his. We are still having night sleep issues

  • I second the swing. We are not swaddling at night and she has adjusted pretty well and I think it helps her with day sleeping as well.

  • Hate to say it but it honestly took about 3 months for my first to figure out day time sleep. She got enough but it was pretty unpredictable. Be thankful for some night time normalness and just keep trying different things for the day.... Swing, walks, car ride, music, white noise, silence, rock to sleep, nurse/feed to sleep, bounce on yoga ball, walk while wearing, bouncy seat/vibration, swaddle, unswaddle, Paci, no Paci, etc.... You are still in the survival mode part... Give yourself and baby some slack to figure it out :)

  • Some kids are cat nappers and struggle with the transition into REM sleep.  DS1 was a cat napper until he was about 7 months old, it was really tough.  I'd spend 30 minutes trying to get him to fall asleep only to have him wake 25 minutes later...still tired and crabby but rested enough that he wouldn't fall back asleep.

He was unusual though, most kiddos will grow out of it sooner.  PP's are right, the motion of being in a stroller or car can help with the transition into deeper sleep.  Swings are great for dealing with this issue (it was the only way I could get a decent nap out of him at all). Basically, we all go through cycles in our sleep and wake after every cycle.  As adults we are able to easily fall back asleep but this is much more difficult for a lot of babies which means the wake...and stay awake.  Also, their cycles are much shorter than ours which can make it even more frustrating and harder to get a decent nap out of a cat napper.

A swing helps prevent baby from becoming too alert during the wake part of their cycle which can help them fall back asleep more easily. This issue doesn't always translate into night sleep although some (like my first son) will wake during their first transition at night.  DS1 would wake without fail 30-45 minutes after bedtime every night and need to be soothed back to sleep, after than he would sleep normally only waking when hungry.

Baby wearing can also help with the transition since it provides the movement that your LO may need.
  • If he likes the binky and an issue is it falling out, try the wubbanubs! My son loved his, and when they are little and sleeping on their backs, the animal rests on their bellies to keep the binky in place.
