Ebf 5 months old constipated

we're on day 4 and she's only had 2 barely smudged diapers. I didn't start her on solids yet but if there is any specific food that can help her i don't mind starting before 6 months.

She's clearly in pain and i hate feeling so helpless! I tried a warm bath, massages, holding upright and vaseline on a q-tip nothing has worked, the massage just helps her let out a few farts, which is better than nothing but still.

  • It's not considered constipation unless their poops come out formed (like adult poop) or if they aren't farting. Also it's totally normal for breast fed babies to go up to 10 days without pooping. Is she peeing plenty? Keep massaging. I bet the bulk of the pain is gas.
We filled a tube sock with rice and a little lavender oil and sewed it shut then microwaved a little. Made sure it wasn't too hot and rested on our sons belly. Our pedi told us if it went on for a week to bring him in to make sure nothing else is wrong and try a suppository. But we never went more than 4 days without a poop. It sucks to watch them like that but it's totally normal. Because breast milk is so nutritious most of it is absorbed and lives very little to move through.

  • This is completely normal for EBF babies. This happened to my LO at 5 months too. She went regularly everyday and then went 7 days in a row without pooping. I was a nervous reck even though the doctor said not to worry. She eventually exploded! Now she goes every 3-5 days between poops! The doc said that breast milk is so nutritious that sometimes there isn't anything to waste! Therefore, you've got some good cream! Ha personally, I would stick anything up her rectum. She will go when ready! Good luck!

@erinjason11 I think you mean you would not want to stick anything up her rectum. ? Lol. I know what you mean tho!
  • I EBF and my 4.5 month old typically only poops every 4-5 days. By the 6th day my pediatrician said it was okay to give 1oz prune juice mixed with 1 oz water. That always does the trick for us.
  • She had her explosion today, thank god!

    Thank you ladies

Just to clarify about the Vaseline i only massaged the outer part i didn't really put it in i'm too paranoid about the cotton bit detaching and staying in! I know there's a 99.9% that'll never happen but still lol
  • @mars8k have you ever heard of the "windi"? It's made by the same company that makes the nose frida. It's supposed to let out trapped gas by sticking this little whistle thing in their butt about as far as you's stick a rectal thermometer. It sounds so weird, and it is but it works. Usually it makes a little poop come out too and makes things start moving. I got some samples at a baby expo and thought, this is insane I'll never use it! Well in a moment of desperation, I used it and it makes this crazy whistling noise letting out all the trapped gas. Poop came out too. You have to put a little Vaseline on the tip.
The more I talk about it the more gross and crazy it sounds... But it works. I cried the first time cause I was mortified to stick anything in my little guys butt!
  • @Sammadden27 that sounds great! I wish i had it when she was a month old and always suffering from gas! Could still be useful i'll look for it thanks!
  • @mars8k I personally haven't seen them in any stores but they sell them on Amazon. The reviews seem like it works great for some, not so great for others. They aren't expensive so I think it's worth a shot.
  • My baby went 6 days without poop. She was in 2nd week of solid food.
I tried prune, which she hated.
Apple, she loved it but no poop.
I tried yogurt & banana. It worked!
My babysitter told me apple juice works.
But juice in bottle is really bad, so keep it for last try.
