Taking Videos of LO - phone vs. video camera?

My husband and I were discussing either getting a nice video camera to record videos of our little one, or else upgrading at least one of our phones to something with a great built-in camera.

Our phones are about 3 years old but had nice cameras for when they came out... 8 megapixels and take pretty good video, but the latest/greatest phones now have like 12-16 megapixel cameras.

I think we'd be more likely to use the camera on our phones rather than dragging around another separate video camera... what do you ladies do?

Re: Taking Videos of LO - phone vs. video camera?

  • We have a nice camera that can do videos and my husband and I both have smart phones with decent cameras. 99% of the time we take pics and videos of our son with our smart phones just because they're on us all the time. If I had to run and grab a different camera we would miss the moment.

I decided we needed a camcorder after my grandmothers died and we discovered we didn't have any good recordings of them.

Our phones are great for spontaneous moments but for things like Christmas, vacations or whatever other activities I like to use the camera or our camcorder since the quality is just so much better.  I make a yearly DVD of all our pictures/videos and while the cell phone videos work, once you have it on your TV they just don't look as great as when we use the camera. Definitely worth the investment to me since I think it's important to have some good resolution family pics/videos we can look back on in the years to come.

  • My husband and I actually just bought a nice camera that also shoots video today! We decided to spend the money on a nice Nikon camera so we can capture high quality images of our new baby...(due in 6 days) I'm sure we will keep using our iPhones too for day to day pictures but we thought it was worth the investment as we will use it for big events and for years to come I'm sure. Good luck!

  • Whatever you do, make sure the device you're using is reliable and can be backed up quickly (don't let the videos live there indefinitely). We used a separate video recorder for DS's birth and it completely died shortly after, losing all data. It was only 2 years old and used originally for our wedding. I can't talk about it without getting upset!

  • I have a nice camera (although a few years old now) and I honestly use my phone far more. Unless you're a good photographer and are wanting professional quality photos all the time, I would spend the money on new phones instead. You could always pick up a cheaper point and shoot camera for those times when you want better photos.
  • Thanks ladies! Maybe we will go check out some gadgets this weekend (I'm sure my hubby would be up for that)!

Can't wait to take some adorable videos :)

  • My husband and I have never been big picture and video people, but before my son was born we thought a video camera might be nice to have. Since we didn't know how much we would use it, we bought a small flip cam like camera and figured if we used it a lot, we would spend more money on a nicer camera. It took great videos, but truthfully, we never used it. We use our phones much much more.

The camera that crashed and burned with DS's birth was a flip. Mine was probably just a lemon, but I don't recommend flips because of this! I've felt safer using my phone and immediately uploading to my google drive account for backup.
