Finding out gender at 15 weeks accuracy question

My Midwife doesn't do an ultrasound till the 20th week and hubby and I are extremely impatient and want to find out at 15 weeks by doing an elective ultrasound. I was just curious of how many moms have found out this early via ultrasound and how accurate was it?

Re: Finding out gender at 15 weeks accuracy question

  • I am not sure about 15 weeks but my doctor scheduled my anatomy scan for 18 weeks. So I think they can find out prior to 20 weeks but not sure on the accuracy rate.
  • Loading the player...
  • Here's the thing: as far as I undertand it, boys will look like boys at 15 weeks, many of the girls will have lost the nub and already look like girls, but a few girls will still have a nub by 15 weeks and thus look like a boy... So if you do an US now and unequivocally see a girl (no nub, 3 lines), then you are set. But if you see a boy, it may be a boy , but may also be a girl...
  • I would wait the extra five weeks. I had an us done at 15 weeks but the tech said they were on 60% sure and they thought boy. It turns out the baby was a girl by the 18-20 mark the odds of finding out and being correct are much higher.

  • I found out I was having a boy between 11w5d and 14w weeks with ALL 5 of my boys...
it's not just the nub... the ultrasound looks very different. Now.... on the flip side... we do elective us at my office and we don't like to call is before 15 weeks. We've only had one change in 3 years....
  • If they can get a good view, generally it's very accurate at 15 weeks.

What's different about the ultrasound? I'm super impatient and want to see if I can figure anything out based on the pictures we have.
  • By no means am I an expert, but my husband and I were able to find out this past Monday at exactly 15 weeks that we are having a baby girl. This seems to be normal in my doctor's office for those wanting to find out the gender.
  • @littlesocks ... it's not just the nub. With girls there's TYPICALLY 3 distinct lines.... with boys there iSnt.
You can Google 15 werk female ultrasound and 15 male ultrasound and see they look very different. .. 12 weeks not so much.... 15 for sure
  • With my DD we found out her gender at 15 weeks at an elective ultrasound. It was very clear that she is a girl. This time around at 11w5d we could see very clearly that we are most likely expecting a boy. I am waiting until my anatomy scan at 20ish weeks for confirmation but I'd be shocked if it changed!
  • I'm going in for an elective u/s tomorrow at 14+5 and the midwife told me they will schedule me another appointment for free if they weren't able to determine the gender accurately so I'm super excited!

  • @elasticheart13 let me know what they tell you! & thanks everyone for the great responses!

My dad is a radiologist and confirmed during my pregnancy with DS that if they can get a proper shot on a decent ultrasound, you can find out with 80% certainty at 12 weeks and 100% at 14 weeks. He doesn't specialize in prenatal but his med school friend does so he emailed him, and sure enough, that's what the data showed. In Las Vegas there are like 1000 elective places that guarantee gender determination at 14 weeks. Literally everyone whose not team green goes and I've never heard them to be wrong, ever.

  • Here in Ontario no one will tell you the sex before at least 18 weeks, and even if you decide to pay for an elective US they also won't take you in for a gender determination until 18 weeks. I am Dying to know!!! I thought I would go to the echo lab this weekend and take a peek myself, but on the other hand it may ruin the surprise for my actual 18-week ultrasound on nov 3. I'm torn!
  • @thaisac1 oh my. I would go insane waiting just those extra 3 weeks lol! Just think it'll be so worth the wait! November 3rd will be here before you know it.
  • I was told 100% boy at like 17 weeks with my first, and found out at 21 weeks she was actually a girl. I tell everyone now, JUST WAIT!! I know it's hard, but so is learning you were told the wrong sex.

Hubby & I came up with the idea that we're going to get the elective ultrasound (it'll be the first since midwife only does 20 week one) to see our peanut and have the tech write down the gender to give to my MIL. She will go crazy if she doesn't find out ASAP lol. So she'll be the only one to know until we get our official scan at 20 weeks to be sure peanut is what they say he/she is!

I don't get it. Why are you spending the money/doing all this if you're not going to find out? If it was just my MIL that wanted to know, I would tell her to suck it up and wait?

  • @pinottoparenthood an elective ultrasound where I live is $50 it's not going to break our bank account. It's also not just for my MIL but for us to see our peanut for the first time as well.
  • @pinottoparenthood did you find out????? Sorry if I missed it in a separate post. Have been swamped all day and just now checking in.

  • @nachosandpeaches We need to start a support group because we're in the same boat.... found out it's another boy. Wish we could hang out and drink... non-alcoholic wine? And feel sorry for ourselves and then just get over it I guess haha. I'm disappointed but I'm sure my boys will have a great relationship.

  • Damnit I've been waiting for this update all day and I was reallllllly hoping it would be a girl. Be sad, it's okay. So many virtual creepy Internet stranger hugs. We'll be jealous of every girl baby together, okay?

  • I feel really lucky to have a healthy baby and everything, but I just can't help feeling jealous when I see people posting about their little girls. And I am an idiot and bought a couple girls' clothes because I was so convinced (initially) that it was my time for a girl... dumb haha.

Now I just feel like I HAVE to convince my husband to go for a third even though he's super not into it.

Yeah, dude- this seems odd to me. Why are you doing this so your MIL can know a few weeks early?

Congrats on your baby boy! One of my cousins had 3 boys and they tried one more time and got a girl! DH and I have talked about how many times we would keep trying to get boy/girl if we had all of one sex. We threw out 4 times, but since pregnancy sucks so bad I'm thinking this kid will be an only child, lol. I have an appt tomorrow to find out the sex, I can't wait! First I had feelings it was a girl, but now I think its a boy. I think the first thing I'll do after we find out is go buy the cutest boy or girl outfit! Maybe you should go pick out the most rridiculously cute baby boy outfit and that will help you feel better! ;)
  • @sarahufl it's not just for my MIL lol. It's also an opportunity for hubby & I to see our peanut for the first time!
  • @pinottoparenthood Can I join your boat?? I'm having another boy and i'm somewhat disappointed as well :/ Where you want to convince your husband, i'm not sure if I want to try for a girl :( I don't want to feel like this again. I hate being this way. I feel like an a$$hole, when i'm lucky to have a healthy baby boy and there are people who can't have babies.

@smayville Don't guilt yourself for feeling how you feel! You can't help it and you're totally entitled to your feelings, as long as you're not complaining about it to people who are struggling with infertility or pregnancy loss or etc.

I know what you mean... I have always been deadset on three kids, but now my two will be three years apart... I can't imagine still going through pregnancy and the newborn stage THREE YEARS from now! Also, I feel like my two little boys will be close and if I do have a girl (or even a third boy), he/she will kind of be the odd one out. And then there's always the chance that I will have two and decide that it's enough, my family is complete, and/or I can't handle any more.

Plus my husband is pretty set on two.

So it's normal to feel sad like you're missing out on that experience. But I also look at it as I will have an awesome family dynamic with two sweet little mamas boys who are hopefully good friends, and people who have one of each are missing out on that, as well... there are pros and cons to every family structure/style! And I know once my little man comes, I won't be sad anymore.

Thanks @loveymay! Actually I have a (maybe not so) funny story about that.... I REALLY wanted my first to be a girl, too... but after the anatomy scan when we found out he was a boy, I decided to try to make the best of it by going to the baby store and buying the cutest boy outfit I could find! So I dragged my husband to Buy Buy Baby after our appointment... and proceeded to cry in the middle of the frilly baby girl clothes section haha. He was mortified ;-)

I am already over my clothing budget for this month... whoops Hunter rain boots!... but I will def have to pick out a few cute boy things next month :-) And it will be sweet to re-use some of my son's stuff that I loved. This will certainly be cheaper than a girl would have been!
