Photos at birth

I always see pics of people meeting their baby for the first time and I absolutely love them. The reaction of a mother and father seeing and holding their baby is just amazing. Did anyone on here have pics like this with their first child? Or do you already have arrangements to have these done? If so, is it a family member that took it or a nurse or a photographer?

Re: Photos at birth

  • Most of the time those are done by a professional birth photographer. If you want them done, contact someone asap because photographers usually take on limited births per month as they are usually on call 24/7, and be prepared to spend some big bucks.

  • So DH and me invited my mother into the delivery room (yeah... A big UO I know) and we asked her to take pics for us - waist up only! They are some of my favorite pics of all time. She got pics of DH cutting the cord, those first moments where DS was placed on me for skin to skin, DH and I looking at DS for the first time, etc. awesome!
  • We have a professional photographer lined up. As PP have said, call soon and be prepared to drop some money. Luckily, we got a great deal on it or else I would not be doing it. I'm sure if you felt comfortable doing it, then maybe a family member or close friend could help you out.
  • My best friend and husband were in the room and luckily she took a couple shots because they are so special to me! Professional ones would be awesome, although I don't think I feel comfortable enough to invite one in :(
  • Check your hospital, too. On my tour we met the maternity photographer. She pops in during your two-day stay and takes some pictures. At first I was totally opposed to this but now I'm thinking I'll regret it if I don't.

I don't want anybody but my mom to take pictures because my mom is actually really good at it.. And I know she will catch every moment I ask her too because I really want those pictures of my DH cutting the cord and the first time I hold my little guy.. And the first time my husband gets to hold him.. It will be nice to have those moments pictured forever.. But if it doesn't happen I won't be too sad.. But we just don't have it in our budget for a professional so my moms the next best thing lol
  • We opted for the "fresh 48" package because my DH was very uncomfortable with a photographer being in the room at delivery. He thinks it's way too personal and intimate. Our photographer will come to the hospital and get hospital pictures after birth, or the next day. It was a great compromise. We will still have some hospital pictures but without it being do evasive. She also offered us this for no charge because we booked our maternity and newborn pictures with her, so she threw in the fresh 48 for free!
  • I had my sister take some and am so happy I did with my last. LOVED them!
  • My doula brings her professional camera and will take pics. She got some great ones last time. My husband is also a photographer and got some good ones after birth. He was too busy before and during labor.
  • I hired a professional photographer last time and again this time! I absolutely LOVE them!! You do need to start to call around asap because it's an on call thing, and most photographers won't book more than 2-3 people to do this for per month!
  • My OB (or maybe it's the hospital, I don't know for sure) doesn't allow photographs or video during pushing or immediately after. It's morbid, but my OB views it as a liability thing in case something goes wrong. The hospital does has a photographer that comes around while you're there to take some newborn photos though :)

I guess my point it check your hospital's policy and your OB's paperwork to see if they say anything about it.
  • DH takes photos, before during (not during pushing) after and leaving hospital. He did alright the last few times so he will do it this time too

  • The nurse offered to take pictures for us, and it was that moment we realized we didn't have the camera or a phone on us (we got rushed for an emergancy c-section and DH left everything in our triage room). Thankfully the nurse brought him to get it so we could have a couple pictures in the OR and recovery room! I'm hoping the nurses offer again!
