Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Not sure what to think

So I had a d and c on Aug 18. When I went for my post op follow up 3 weeks later my OB ordered a blood test to monitor the hcg. Hes since ordered weekly labs and 2 weeks ago he called and told me he thinks this was a partial molar pregnancy. I had never even heard of this term. So he referred me to a specialist that I saw today. In the meantime I've been getting weekly blood draws and my numbers have been going down. I went in to the specialist today fully prepared for her to tell me this was a partial molar and she told me my pathology report came back inconsistent with a partial molar. At this point she told me she can't say one way or the other if it was and for me to continue to get weekly blood draws and to hold off on TTC until I get to zero.

Re: Not sure what to think

  • It is hard to say what is normal when it comes to testing HCG post miscarriage...it seems the range is huge.  How far along were you?  Mine was a mmc.  I was 12 weeks, baby measured 9.  My D&C was 9/18 and my levels were checked Monday and were 7.2

  • I was 10 weeks, I think he said baby measured 8 weeks and it was an mmc. My last draw was tues and i was at 995 so that makes me think if it isn't a molar something must be going on for my numbers to be still so high.
  • I agree, I would be concerned that my levels weren't dropping faster. I have seen stories where they did ultrasounds to check for left over tissue too.

I am sorry you have to go through this. Miscarriage is hard enough and with all the extra baggage...sometimes I don't know if it is all just too much.

    Stay strong.
  • Thank you so much! It's like a cruel mind game. When you are pregnant you are praying for numbers to increase and after a loss you are praying for them to decrease. What a roller coaster! But my OB says to just focus on the fact that they are going down. At my post op appointment I was 9000 and now im 995. Just praying they don't end up saying it was a molar pregnancy in the end because the wait time to TTC increases along with a bunch of other complications.
  • Did they do any testing on the tissue after the d and c? My pathology results suggested the PMP but my chromosomal testing of the baby confirmed it.

They told me there was an abnormality that began when a T. Sorry I forgot the name but my husband and I have a 2 year old son so they said whatever it was wasnt genetic so im totally confused.

I also have fibroids and she told me that some of the tissue could've hooked on to the fibroid and that could he causing my levels to go down slower too .

With the PMP how long did it take for your levels to go to zero?

I'm about 6 or 7 weeks post d and c and I'm almost at zero. Last blood draw two weeks ago was 9. Hoping today's blood draw comes back at zero.

That's awesome. Fingers crossed that it does for you! I can't wait to get there.

After zero did they say how long till you can TTC (if you choose to)

Yes- 6 months. Initially she said 3 months but once the chromosomes confirmed it she consulted with a specialist and changed it to 6 months minimum. I'm disappointed to say the least.

I know what you mean. The wait is so hard! I had another draw today. Hoping for a lower number then last week
  • @sophia1913 i was a 9 two weeks ago and a 3 today. Super disappointed, was hoping this was my last weekly draw. Dr doesn't consider <5 to be negative, need 2 or less. Considering getting a second opinion. Hope yours is less!!!

Oh no! So far from what I've been seeing most doctors consider 5 or less negative. Hes not recommending any meds is he? Id for sure get the second opinion.

I just got my latest results today. 885 which is down from 990s last week. But now he wants me to come in on Thurs for a sonogram to look at the tissue. He mentioned maybe having me take Cytotec. I'm not too sure on the pros and cons of that are but I guess we'll figure it out after Thurs.
