Hanging with people with colds

I was arranging coffee with a friend when she said she has a cold. I've gotten the flu shot but I feel kinda paranoid about seeing her when she still has a cold. I'm also dealing with minor cold symtpoms since my shot.
Am I paranoid? Or are other people just s cautious?

  • I would still go but just not hug her or anything. Does she know you're pregnant? I'm surprised she just wouldn't cancel.

@akb1125 Nope I'm 11weeks+3 and planning to share the news with family and friends in a few weeks.
  • I'd go. DD has been sick like twice already since I've been pregnant, it becomes unavoidable.

I guess I'm the minority thus far, I wouldn't go. I would politely reschedule. Being sick while pregnant is miserable! My colds typically turn into sinus and/or respiratory infections and it's even worse. Happened to me twice with DS and I ended up on antibiotics both times. It's one thing to unknowingly be exposed as we are everyday but I would never voluntarily put myself in that position. I think she was very nice for telling you. Some people wouldn't even do that.

Edited because my iPhone is smarter than I am.
  • Unfortunately, I think colds are unavoidable this time of year. I'd reschedule for next week if it's easy to do, but otherwise I would go and avoid touching her hands/hugging and then wash up well afterward. If you catch it, it will stink, but it's highly unlikely it would do you or baby any actual damage.

  • No... Just no...
  • I would not hesitate to go. Colds are everywhere. Might as well stop going anywhere public because I guarantee somebody with the sniffles was there today.

  • I'm a nurse in a school for kids with severe special needs, so I'm in contact with all kinds of bodily fluids all the time so it doesn't really phase me to be near someone with a cold. I have a cold right now myself. Wash your hands often, that's the best you can do.
  • Yeah that's ridiculous to cancel. Just don't share food/breathe in each other's faces/etc. And wash your hands.

  • It is pretty hard to completely avoid people with colds.  On the subway I've already been around some sneezy, coughy people.  When my friend told me she wasn't going to come to brunch on Sunday because she didn't want to get me sick, I appreciated the gesture (she's the only one of the group that knows I'm pregnant so far) but I told her I would like her to be there if she's up for it.  We just won't sit next to each other or share food.
