Water breaking at work?

Hi this is my first post! Also my first child and pregnancy!
This might be a super silly question but i get seem to just shake it off my mind! Im curious, what can i say?
I work in a call center and am on the computers all day long. What if (when im closer to my due date) my water breaks at work in a company chair? What do it? Will they be mad about the chair? XD
Btw hows everyone doing? :3

Re: Water breaking at work?

  • This is seriously my greatest pregnancy fear.
  • Loading the player...
  • Me too as of today! Didnt even cross my mind til just 30 minutes ago. O.o i find stuff like this popping into my mind all the time. Its not cool lol.
  • True! Thank you!
And dang that would be terrifying! I work in a cube so at least it wont be infront of anyone if it even happens.
  • I guess you will get a new chair :-)

But seriously, if your company gets mad about that then they don't seem like a great company to work for. It's not like you can control it. If it makes you feel better though, I've had 4 pregnancies so far and my water has never sporadically broken until I've been at the hospital well into labor. Typically my doctor has to break it for me. I think I remember reading that your water breaking before actual contractions/labor only happens in 1 out of 10 women so there is a good chance you would already be at the hospital. But if not and it happens at work, so be it.

I do keep a waterproof pad on my bed just in case and closer to time, will keep a garbage bag, towel, and change of pants in my car in case they are needed (I'd like to not leak all over mine or someone else's car seats, that mess can't be cleaned lol).

  • Most people's water does not break until later in labor. That said mine broke in my car on my way home from work hours before I had any contractions. Amniotic fluid doesn't smell or stain. So no big deal. I was just glad it didn't happen in front of my students.
  • I kept puppy pads on my desk chair, bed, and chair seat. Totally unnecessary, but I was paranoid.
  • My water broke in the middle of the night with DD and it really wasn't that dramatic. When I got out of bed I felt a few drops of wetness on my thighs and it didn't really click until I was on the toilet and liquid was coming out but I knew I wasn't peeing. A super pad does a good job of keeping things contained. At least it worked for me. I work an hour from where I live and my hospital so it's definitely a concern I understand

  • I teach as well and all my teacher friends say when you get close to your due date carry around a bottle of water everywhere so if you happen to break in front of kids blame it on spilt water!
  • PP is correct that only 10% of women will have spontaneous rupture of membranes before the onset of labor, so it's really not very likely at all. I've had five babies and had two ruptured artificially at 5 cm, one artificially ruptured while I was pushing, one baby born in the caul, and one ruptured naturally during pushing.
  • I know it's not super likely, but I'm terrified of this happening.. I have nightmares about it breaking during our Monday meeting (on web conference.. With the other office).

In the caul? Super cool! Do you have pictures you're willing to share?!

My water broke in bed all three times (before labor started).

  • @kielpinskim I wish! There was nobody at that birth to take pictures. I had a 62 minute labor, so I was home alone with my three older kids- dh got home just minutes later, and my midwife took another hour.
  • Mine broke while I was peeing. It was hilariously amazing, it was a gush and then a lot of leaking. I'd have a pad available at the end just in case. I went through 3 before we went to the hospital.

    Wow!

I saw some pro photos from a birth with a baby born in the caul--so amazing and supposedly good luck!

What a crazy experience that must've been! Can you send some of your quick labor dust my way? My transition alone took three times that.

  • @kielpinskim I've also had a 48 hour back labor, so...
But yes, that was a crazy experience. I would much rather have a more moderate length labor- easier to deal with, for sure.
  • Out of three kids, two waters were manually broken by Drs, one broke on its own while my body was pushing on its own (extremely fast labor). My biggest fear for this one is either going into labor at work (I work at a hospital, but not the one I'm delivering at) and them not letting me leave, or me delivering at home or in the car. My labor with my last child was 30 minutes from active labor to baby out, who knows what this one will be like.

  • I'm a teacher and my coteacher's water broke during a math lesson last year. She felt it when she stood up. It dripped on the floor a little but I don't think she even realized. The kids kinda knew but rolled with it. I got someone to stay with our class and took her to the nurse. If it happens at work, you'll be way more excited that the baby is coming than worried about the chair. If you're that concerned sit on a towel when you're getting close and it will absorb.

  • I do have a question, are you planning to work until your due date? Because if you're not you really don't have to worry about it. I stopped working about three weeks before my due date and my water did actually break at the house spontaneously. In fact they had to give me drugs to start my labor cause I didn't go into labor at all. Even if rupturing spontaneously it wasn't super dramatic there was a gush like in the movies but what the movies don't show you is that after the – water continues to trickle out in fact two hours later when I was at the hospital I still had water leaking out which was embarrassing. My advice if you are working up until that point is to put something over your chair just so you're more comfortable.

LOL was it Pam from The Office who did that?  She was faking but it was the first thing I thought of!
  • I hadn't even thought this far ahead yet! Man, something else to worry about! I guess it's not actually "water" but gross stuff then?

A lot of people only get six weeks off... so I would never stop working weeks before my due date because I want to maximize the amount of time I have with my new baby.

I get 12 weeks, but yes, I'm planning on working until labor starts, unless the doc says otherwise. I had a friend take off a week early from anticipated delivery (she was little.. They thought she'd go early)... And baby was almost two weeks late. It really cut into her time with baby at home.
  • I've been thinking about that and pooping during labor... All this crazy stuff! Breasts leaking in public.... Baby blow out on a plane with no back up diaper.... Ah!!! Maybe it's better to not think about it... Or just start wearing adult diapers when the time gets close...
  • I got 12 weeks but I took time off before hand because I was on my feet all day and as I got closer and closer to my due date it got really hard. You'll have to see what your body does too because my ankle swelled really really badly so I couldn't be on my feet all day anymore. Doctors orders.

DD had a blow out on my first flight with her... and I had nothing but an extra diaper. I wiped everything as clean as I could... but had to put the clothes back on her.

It's not so bad! I didn't poop during labor. A lot of people do, but apparently you barely notice and the doctors just whisk it right away. Baby blow outs are NBD... and you will learn to always have diapers and a change of clothes! And they make pads for leaky boobs. It will be okay!

This is when I would just let my kid go diaper-only.
