Measuring big!

I just came from my 28 weeks appt and the OB said I am measuring 4cm bigger than normal.

Is anyone else in the same boat?

I'm going in 2 weeks for growth ultrasound and 30 wk appt. TIA!

Re: Measuring big!

  • Yep, and it is nothing to be concerned about in the slightest if there is nothing else that concerns your care provider.  When they measure you, they are measuring fundal height, which is the height from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus.  This doesn't in any way reflect the size of the baby, just the size of your uterus.  You might be 'bigger' because you have more amniotic fluid (normally a positive thing), because your uterus just happens to be stretching faster, or a specific anatomy thing of yours (I had abdominal surgery when I was little, and my scar tissue limits my uterus' ability to grow side to side, so it grows up instead).

It is also difficult to get an absolute precise measurement, as finding the top of your pubic bone and the top of your uterus is not always an exact science.  The measurements you are getting are in centimeters, which are pretty small, so if the doc is putting the tape measure slightly one way or the other, it is easy for these to be a little flexible.  The 'correct' fundal height measurements you are 'supposed' to have are based on an average of lots and lots of women (average 1 cm per week of gestation) and so a bit of variation from them is totally normal as not everyone will be exactly average.

Don't let these numbers cause you anxiety, it is so easy to get freaked out over every little thing.  If you are feeling stress about them, make sure to talk to your care provider so that you feel more comfortable.  It is possible if you are enough 'off'' that it may be cause for them to check into other causes, but if they are not concerned about specific issues than don't let yourself panic.  It really doesn't mean your baby will be big or anything else, and you might just find by next time your measurements will be closer to standard.

  • My friend had her dd about a month ago and during her entire pregnancy she was measuring big. She ended up going into labor naturally at 38.5 weeks and her dd was 8 lbs.
  • My measurements are normal baby is measuring 4 days ahead and weighs 3lbs and I was only 27 weeks then. I think he'll be here before his due date more so around the original one. Everyone told me to stop eating because I'm gaining too much weight like no he's literally just a big baby even doctors and midwives have confirmed.
  • I'm 28 weeks today.
I went to the doctor at 27wks 2days
    Measured 33 weeks.
My doctor is concerned about gestational diabetes, but I passed my 3hr test
  • I went to my 25 week app & im measuring 28 weeks. She says there is nothing to be concerned about.
  • I'm measuring 4 weeks ahead too. I already have an ultrasound scheduled for this Thursday to check baby boys kidneys otherwise OB would have scheduled me for the growth scan as well. I know my due date is off by almost a week, but things like the baby being breech can make you measure ahead too. My little guy has been either breech or sideways the whole time so I'm not too worried. Looking forward to getting another peek at him! :)
  • I'm measuring fine but my doctor has told me that sugar and carbs make the baby grow too fast so perhaps consider cutting back if you aren't already.
  • Can I ask when you guys started getting measured?  I'm going in for my 24 week appointment Thursday (I'll technically be 24 and 4 days at that point) and I haven't been measured at all yet.  Normal?

    Thanks so much!
  • Two weeks ahead with this baby and two weeks ahead with my last. I'm petite, but my babies weigh 9+ lbs. just like I did.
  • Measuring 10 days ahead (per ultrasound at last appointment). She is taking after brother :) or ds measuring big from 22 weeks on (to the point that our Dr expected him to be an almost 10 lb baby and was going to schedule a csection). But ds decided to come on his own time and was born at 36 1/2 weeks, perfectly healthy. Ds measuring big and I had a lot of amniotic fluid (Dr said it can cause your body to think you are further along and cause preterm labor). So as of 2 weeks ago, dd is starting the same trend with measurments so we will see when she decides to come :)
  • Thanks girls! I passed my 3hr glucose with DD#1 3 years ago and I am waiting for results from 1hr glucose test today. Staying positive on that end.

I have been chowing on carbs bc of horrible heartburn throughout this pregnancy. However, weight gain is only 22lbs (16lbs according to my digital tracker at home) and BP has been awesome!

I delivered DD#1 at exactly 39 weeks so I won't be shocker if this little princess comes a little early too :)
  • @maureenmce they measured me for the first time at my 24 week appt. I measured at exactly 24cm and my doc was really excited about it lol. From what I gathered, it is definitely normal to measure ahead!!
