Giving baby medicine?

Anyone have tips on how to give a baby medicine (the liquid kind)? I have to give my baby a teaspoon twice daily and it's a huge struggle. She holds it in her mouth and then spits it out. We do it in little bits at a time slowly and we've tried putting in a pacifier after that works the best so far. The pacifier medicine dispenser (a pacifier with a little cup for medicine) didn't work at all.

Re: Giving baby medicine?

  • At our doctors office they told us to put it in his cheek. Like if it had a dispenser thing, just put in the side of his mouth and push fast. Apparently they taste less if you do this.

  • Ya, I always lean her back some, put it in the cheek, then squeeze her cheeks (to open her mouth) so she has to swallow and can't close her mouth, which is when she can spit it out.
  • I did it today while she was crying, laid back on my legs. She would gurgle a bit and then I would blow in her face to make her swallow. I tried the cheek and she became a mega drool factory and drooled it all out. Obviously I didn't do it while she was hardcore crying because of the choking risk but she was crying.

  • The crazy part of all this is that I have three cats and it's easier to give medicine to my cats than to the baby!
  • We give her a bottle and then break the seal whilst she's sucking the bottle give the medicine and she swallows it without realising. But Ar this age when they prescribe medicine
Do they take into the account the
Amount that is spat back out or is she meant to swallow the whole
    Dose?
  • Oh my gosh I cannot thank you guys enough! I did the cheek method and then squeezed her cheeks a little (so she couldn't close her mouth) and blew gently on her face and she swallowed nearly the whole thing (slowly giving a little bit at a time). She wasn't supposed to be taking the entire dose but she was getting half or even less and now she got most of it. Thank you thank you I cannot wait for her to feel better (and also for me to be able to get a little sleep at night!!).
  • The pharmacist always gives us a syringe that comes with a stopper that fits in the neck of the medicine bottle. That makes it really easy. Then I just squirt her medicine in the back of her cheek in small amounts til she's taken it all. We've gotten to where she doesn't spit any back out. We've also done it where we squirt some in, then put her bottle in her mouth immediately so she swallows it with the milk.
  • When LO got his immunizations, the nurse shot a little into his cheek and then tickled under his chin...which caused him to swallow.  I had not seen that before so I tried it at home with his Tylenol... sure enough, he swallows when you tickle under his chin.  It's magic.

  • You sneak it in the side of mouth with tip of syringe while baby is drinking a bottle ..

We put it in the nipple of her bottle and stick just the nipple in her mouth. She thinks it's food long enough to suck it down!

Not so fun fact - Tylenol is too thick to be sucked through a nipple. Found this out the hard way, at 1 am.
  • Thanks for the post! Baby had his vaccines yesterday and had a small fever. I did the cheek thing. He had most of it.
