April 2016 Moms

so yeah, this just happened....

I'm down to 2 pairs of jeans I can uncomfortably wear, pretty much to the point of being painfully uncomfortable. So tonight to work I wore my only pair of maternity jeans with a full panel....the full panel feels so tight like I'm wearing shapewear, who came up with this design BTW?? I tried folding the panel down but its so tight, it cuts into my waist giving me muffin top. I tried folding them completely down and tucked over my bum/underwear area...no luck....so I grabbed a pair of scissors, went to the bathroom and chopped that whole sucker off! Omg the relief! The pressure is off my stomach, only now I'm not sure how well the pants will stay up. I've basically traded one problem for another! Good thing I'm wearing a long shirt tonight, oops! I needed to share this with someone, I'm not close to anyone at work enough to share what I've done, haha. I'm totally wearing yoga pants the rest of this week, I can't take being so uncomfortable all the time. Anyone else had to take drastic measures wardrobe wise? Please tell me I'm not the only one who has Frankensteined their pants!!! :)

Re: so yeah, this just happened....

  • Yeah they are totally falling down. I think I'll try to add a button or something when I get home to get them from falling. If it works, I'll patent my design and sell my brand of comfortable maternity pants for dirt cheap for us all! :)

  • I can't have the constricting feeling either. With my first pregnancy, I had one pair of capris and one pair of jeans. Both were old navy maternity and elastic waistband. I still have both of them. I also bought a pair of side panel jeans (best ever!), and a pair of Capri leggings

  • I have not Frankensteined my pants but I'm dying at your post. You can find jeans/pants with really nice bands that aren't restrictive at pea in the pod. Or maybe it's just time to size up :p
  • @DougalMcG if I go up a size, the legs and butt of the jeans are way too baggy. All the maternity jeans I've tried on (Target, Motherhood Maternity) are too baggy in the thighs/butt but fit in the belly. I am not sure why designers think pregnant women all of a sudden have bigger thighs? I certainly don't have weirdly skinny thighs or anything, but I sure can't find any pants that fit! I'll have to check out a pea in the pod though, maybe there is something there that will work! Thanks!

PS rant: why can't I find jeggings that aren't skinny leg??? I have to wear steel toed shoes to work which would look so ridiculous with skinny leg pants! Ahhh the struggle!!!
  • If you can make it work in your climate, skirts/dresses are your friend.
  • The belly band has been my savior the past few weeks! I can still wear my regular pants and it holds them up completely open!

  • I stretched out my cotton unstretchy undies this morning and am wearing my jeans with a hairtie holding it up. My undies are kinda stretchy now that i've ripped half the seams but i'll see how long I can wear these pants. I'm down to 3 pairs of pants now. Holding off on maternity shopping till i completely run outta options!!
  • Maybe you should try petite?

I, personally, am a fan of the full panel. It shapes my belly and makes it look (to me) less bloated flabby and more bumpish. They make the maternity pants that aren't full panel though.

Maybe you should try going up a size with regular pants?

  • Belly bands are my savior!!!
  • Omg low panel only here! I own zero full panel maternity pants. I hated them. Low panel for the win!

  • Some maternity pants have better panels than others. Many panels aren't so tight but probably won't work as well so early in pregnancy. Just keep trying different brands until you find something you like!

  • There's lots of different types of pants. Try to find a 2nd hand store that sells gently used...I saved so much money on clothing that looks (and in some cases IS) brand new! I think I now have more maternity jeans than normal ones... I got a little carried away. Good luck!

  • @loveymay Target and Motherhood have a weird fit on me as well. The brands that Pea in the pod carry can be a little expensive, but it might be worth it. Especially if, like me, you wear your maternity jeans even when you aren't pregnant. (No shame!)
  • I've been wearing thick leggings and skirts, which works because all the shirts I own that I would wear with jeans make me look like I went hard at the buffet. This just makes me dread the shopping even more - I'm short but have very athletic thighs and a pretty sizable butt for as petite as I am. Normal pants are a nightmare; I can't imagine how bad maternity pants will be.
  • While I'm still holding out on real maternity wear, my cousin (who's pregnant with her 5th) recommends Old Navy's and J Brands maternity jeans.  I know that the latter is pretty pricey but for all I know they're worth it.  I too am dreading the upcoming wardrobe changes with my big hips and thighs...  I find tights that compress my tummy super uncomfortable now with the bloating I'm experiencing so I think side panel will be my best bet.

*repeats mantra: It's all for the baby.  It's all for the baby.  It's all for the baby...*
  • I wore the belly band today at work (bought one size up), and I was feeling the same.  Took it off and did the rubber band trick.  Even that hurt.  Then, I was like screw it, and took the rubber band off.  I just left my fly unzipped and pants unbuttoned...feel so much better!!  I'm wearing a long sweater, so you can't tell.  The hips are tight enough where they are so far staying up.

I haven't popped yet, but I'm so bloated I might as well have.  Think it's time to go shopping tonight.
  • I loved old navy too. Also for leggings I didn't buy any maternity ones, I just found ones with fold over at the top.

  • Your post was halarious. Love it. I had to go to charity shop to get a used pair of granny pants two sizes too big. My old trousers which used to be too big are now too uncomfortable and I start to feel a little sick if my belly can't have full stretching room. Going maternity clothes shopping with husband this weekend
  • I love making fun of her so much that I'm embarrassed to say this, but I love Jessica Simpson jeans, regular and maternity. Somebody who loves her likes to donate to my local Savers, where I bought them for three to seven dollars, depending on the discount of the day,and they're all in great shape, and whole the maternity ones are too new to me to say, the regular ones have lasted really well. The maternity seem to have some crazy vanity sizing going on, though. I was a size 6 to 8 before this pregnancy, and bought an extra small jean.
  • There's  a good resale group on Facebook where eI have gotten some things... Maternity Clothes Resale I think it's called. I also buy a lot at consignment. And I have found great pants at Old Navy and Gap.

  • Now see I love the compression - year round pregnant or not! The occupational therapist in me is pretty sure it's a sensory issue, the deep pressure is so soothing. I wear tights and underarmour long sleeve shirts under my clothes/scrubs in the winter until the weather won't allow it any more. I'm loving wearing yoga leggings with boots right now, dream come true! I have one pair of maternity leggings that I got at Target that I can fold down the full panel front right now and it's really comfortable and wonderful.
  • Hey to those of you that love the old navy jeans, do they actually carry them in your store or can you only order them online? I checked out my local old navy the other day and they didnt have even 1 maternity item in the store. Im a little hesitant to order online, a few years ago i tried on regular jeans there and they just didnt really fit me well. They probably have a decent return policy if i order and dont like them, but I just hate the hassle, thinking of giving it a try though...

You probably can buy online and return to the store, which isn't hard... although a few items are return by mail only. Only certain ON stores carry maternity. You should be able to ind which ones do with the store search online. My local store has maternity, but still not nearly the selection that they have online.

  • Ha! No Frankenstein pants here, but I have been pulling my sweats up as high as they'll go, lol. I bought a box of Belly Belts for $20. Basically bra extenders for your pants. Nice little temp fix! :)
  • Bellyband all the way for me :) I love it!

  • Dude ... I finally caved in due to the bloat at 14 weeks and got myself a pair of the dreaded maternity pants.... Holy amaze balls the heavens opened up soon as I put them on I could breathe again ... Miracle!!!! Lol I was putting off getting any because I'm so insanely picky when it comes to clothing , shoes, and handbags. The full panel feels like Christmas morning and the stretchy material of the jean itself is the bomb! Here's what I bought : https://m.hm.com/us/product/83541?article=83541-D
True to size and I'm 5'91/2 " and they are a good length . If you are shorter they would look cute cuffed with boots !
  • I went to the mall and Target tonight, and I swear no one sells good maternity clothes.  H&M had a few racks-- some okay and some terrible.  Target had good basics.  My Gap doesn't have maternity in store :(  Old Navy had the best selection, but it was mostly summer stuff.  Umm, it's going to be freezing here by Saturday night.  Seems like the casual selection was decent.  I got some cute jeans (that can fit my huge bloat now, bump later) and a sweater at Old Navy.  Finally....I'm going to feel like a normal person wearing jeans!

But, I'm going to a wedding on Saturday and all the dresses were just not flattering at all (or they were too summery).  I think I'm just going to have to wear a nice cable sweater, black leggings, and glam it up with fancy hair, heels, jewelry, and red lipstick.
  • I'm plus-size, and finding maternity clothes is a NIGHTMARE.  I have some things from my first pregnancy, but my bottom is smaller and my top is bigger than it was then (things just rearranged after giving birth).  The only brand that exists is Motherhood, and they only have them online and in a few stores.  I love my full panel, but they are falling down while my shirts are skintight.  Frustrating to shop for maternity clothes if you're not a size 0!

PS--the local Destination Maternity had a HUGE display of tiny size 27 jeggings that I walked past after the saleslady stuck her nose up and said "We don't have THOSE sizes HERE." Stabby stab stab!

How rude! :/ I am plus size also. Old Navy has a pretty decent selection, it's even better online. I gave away any maternity clothes from my first pregnancy since 1. I'd lost a ton of weight, and 2. I was single (6 years ago) and not expecting marriage or children in my near future, lol. I think in a few weeks I'll make the plunge and order and couple pairs of jeans online to see me through.
  • Old Navy only goes up to 18, and sadly I am bigger than that.  I'm also 6 feet tall, so I just have to have cold ankles.

I really need to suck it up and go shopping this weekend! Towardsthe end of my shift last night, my butchered pants were falling down, I guess they got stretched out as the night went on. I wore yoga pants tonight with a hoodie. I'm so glad I work in a lab and on night shift, because I can totally get away with this look! No dress code here, but I do have to wear pants for lab safety. So no Capri's/skirts/dresses unfortunately. But yoga pants I can get away with. I don't give 2 hoots that I look like a complete hobo tonight either!!!

BTW, the pants were Jessica Simpson brand and were size petite medium. They fit okay everywhere (besides being too short, I'm 5'6) that panel was just too much. So that was $50 down the drain, unless I can somehow add a button to make them wearable.

You gals have given me good advice and direction, I just need to get off my lazy butt and drag myself to the nearest mall. :)
  • I can't believe no one has said this yet ...... jeggings. They are cheaper than maternity jeans and feel like yoga pants.

  • I've been so anti pants lately I went to five stores trying to find a maternity dress. I live in Florida so sweater dresses are completely impractical for me, and that's all I found. I did manage to score three cute shirts from Burlington Coat Factory though for less than $30! I don't think I've purchased clothing for myself unless my fiancé gave me a gift card in well over two years, so this was the best day ever!
  • I guess working on a dairy farm has its perks! Haha. I am just starting to bump out, and Walmart sweat pants are becoming my new best friend. I also lucked out and got a pair of maternity jeans at Sears for $25. They're a little large in the leg (I'm 5'2", 106lbs), but overall pretty nice.

The motherhood store has petite! I'm also 5'2" and I finally discovered petite a few years ago. I don't have to walk on the bottoms of my pants anymore.

  • I needed a dress for a wedding last weekend and I just went to a local consignment store, bought a ton of regular (not maternity) dresses in a size up from my normal,a nd tried them all on until I found some that flattered the bump. I don't think a 12-15 week bump can fill out a maternity dress yet, it's not going to look good.

  • OH MY GOSH how have I lived all of my life not knowing how incredible maternity pants are?!? I went shopping today and found two pairs on sale for $14.95, plus got 35% off. I may never wear real pants again.
