new glucose test?

I was at my OB this morning and was scheduled for a 2 hour glucose test.  My doctor informs me that the 2 hour test has been popular in Europe for years and is becoming the norm in the US.  He states that over the next few years we will all be doing it instead of the 1 hour test.  The thought being that it is more accurate, and has less likelihood of a false positive result.  Has anyone else heard of this?

Re: new glucose test?

  • My glucose test is scheduled for next week and I was told it is a 1 hour test. I'm pretty sure if I fail that one then the next step would be to do a 3 hour test. I've never heard of the 2 hour test

  • My glucose test was only 1 hour and it was delicious if you ask me I don't like anything orange so I chose fruit punch tastes just like a Popsicle. Could just be the doctors personal choice and how he likes to run his practice. No news is good news at my ob office so I passed with flying colors.
  • Yes, my doctor said the same. Essentially there are a lot more false positives with the 1 hour screening so the 2 hour test is more accurate. Bad news is if you fail there's no second test - you're diagnosed with GD.

That's interesting.  I don't think he mentioned that to me yesterday.   Hopefully it won't be an issue, I don't seem to have any risk factors.  Maybe it's because the 2 hour is more accurate that it's the final step.
  • Yup, that's exactly what my doctor said when I asked her.

  • Mine today was a 1 hour test. If I fail this one, I get sent for a 2 hour test. They are definitely common.
  • Yes, my clinic does the 2 hour test now instead of the 1 hour.

Well that doesn't seem to make sense.  What's the point of the one hour then?  Are you sure you don't go for a three hour if you fail the one hour as seems to by the typical progression?
  • I just did the 2 hour test yesterday, my Drs switched recently. I did the 1 hour with my 2 previous pregnancies, it was much more pleasant!
  • I'm in Australia, everyone here only seems to do the 2 hour test now. It's supposed to be a lot more accurate.
  • I had the 2 hour test. I passed but yes, if you fail you are treated for GD. I kind of like this. I heard about so many false positives with the 1 hour and dreaded needed to do a 3 hour test especially since I could only do this during the work week and not on the weekends which means having to take a half day at work to sit around.

If it is true that it's much more accurate, then it's great you don't have to come back for more testing.
