Active Moms- Check in 10/13

Soooooooo how we feeling ladies?! I know staying active is so tough, but so good for baby! (and hopefully makes them not late I've heard?!)

I'm still getting up and going to the gym, do between 40-55 minutes on the elliptical a few times a week. SLOW. but still is something. The other days I'm sure to do something, even if its a yoga DVD and walking the dog with my hubby. I stopped my weights, they made me too tired :(

My motivation is that everyone I know whose baby came early (but still full term, after 37w!) or on time was active...and I still am having daily milkshakes lol.

How are you ladies finding motivation to stay active, even as time is coming to and end?

Re: Active Moms- Check in 10/13

  • My doctor made me stop running at 35 weeks because neither the baby nor I were as big as he would like (she was measuring at 30% at the 35 week u/s to check her position). He said, "Sometimes when mom is too fit, so is baby." I put on 2 pounds in the next 2 weeks and she picked up 10 ounces (at least according to the u/s). I am really skeptical that running had anything to do with her being small (one of my 3 children was 6 pounds, 1 ounce when he was born at almost 39 weeks - the other 2 were 7.14 at 40 weeks - so I have the potential for a small baby and I am only 5' 3"). I have REALLY missed the exercise and have signed up for a Thanksgiving 5k with my 6 pounder (who is now 8). Unfortunately, I am 39 weeks, 1 day today with #4 and she is going NOWHERE (fingertip dilated and thick cervix)! I am going to start walking this weekend. I feel like I would have progressed a lot more had I been able to stay active.

  • Doctor made me stop from mid 34 weeks to 36 weeks due to lots of contractions, but now I'm back at it. I've been doing CrossFit 4 or so times per week and a lot of walking also. It has been making me feel better, but I have to do a lot of modifying. I'm pretty limited, but something is better than nothing and getting moving helps!

  • @wee3kings that IS interesting about your dr's comment about your baby being too "fit"! My little guy was in 30% at my 23w ultrasound, and they didn't say anything about it (only concern if in the top or bottom 10%). Not sure how much he weighs now...my husband was a huge baby, and I hear it runs on the male side? Time will tell! Also, I had to stop running (was doing 6mi a few times a week!) around 24w due to pelvic pain, so I'm chained to the elliptical.   Good for you starting to walk again!!

@crbpjb glad you are back at it. Something is always better than nothing!!
  • @kim1228 I hope you're right about it running on the male side!  My husband is 6' now, but he was 6lb7oz as a baby.  I was only 5lb11oz, but I was a twin and my older sister was over 8 as a singleton.

I was having tons of contractions while walking, but then it all fizzled out shortly after.  I've definitely been experiencing BH when I work out, but it depends on what I do.  I've been taking it easy, but still getting my heart rate up and trying to break a sweat.

  • I was really active earlier in pregnancy but was put in bedrest at 29 weeks due to constant contractions. My doctor took me off bedrest when I hit 36 weeks (yay!!!) because (a) the contractions tapered way off and (b) im close enough to term that my dr is comfortable if I go into labor now.

Right now I'm trying to gear back up and figure out a healthy activity level after being inactive for so many weeks. I've been walking and doing yoga, but even those simple things sometimes feel strenuous right now.

So interesting what you said about active mamas having smaller, earlier babies. I was pretty active during my first pregnancy and my son was born at 38 weeks, 5lbs13oz. This LO is measuring on the small side too.
  • Y'all are doing great!! I never thought I'd be still exercising this far into pregnancy.

At almost 38 weeks, I've just stopped my group exercise class I was attending three times a week. LO is so low that squats and lunges are just too painful. I've also been getting cramps about 40 min into the workout that take my breath away. So, now I'm just aiming for some good, long walks as often as possible with some arm exercises at home with my resistance bands.

  • I stopped weight lifting around 35w because of lack of energy, but I kept up with walking/jogging until I was about 39 weeks. Now I just do good to roll out of bed. I'm very much looking forward to getting back into my regular routine soon, and I am thinking about doing the Thanksgiving 5k my city holds.

    Due Date: Oct 11th 2015

  • Y'all are awesome! I have 2 kiddos already so getting to the gym, etc just wasn't happening. I have been trying to take brisk walks twice a day and I am feeling really good! I am curious to see if how this baby is size wise. I went to the gym a few times a week with my last baby, clear up to 39 weeks and she was much bigger than her older sister. Weird!
  • I was hospitalized at 33 weeks with too-early, regular, painful contractions & was restricted from workouts & running. I've actually been in so much pain from continuing contractions anyway that I can't even imagine going to the gym at this point!

Weird thing - after I got out of the hospital and quit working out cold-turkey, at my doctors appointment one week later, I had lost 7 lbs. It became so incredibly hard to make myself eat much, and I'm still struggling with forcing the food down. I feel like my body just went into depressed mode with no physical activity. :(
It's also just that I'm always hurting and any kind of food is so unappetizing! (And normally I eat a TON!)
  • You all are very impressive! I basically stopped everything except walking and swimming. I was doing laps until about 36 weeks, now I just splash around in my gym's warm pool. There's no brisk walking anymore. It's not that I can't, I just have to pee constantly so I need to go slow.
