AW/vent/I feel crazy, afraid of the dark

So... I just needed to get this out there because I'm feeling psycho right now. I haven't really been "afraid of the dark" since I was a kid but right now my anxiety is like through the roof.

I was getting ready for bed and my dogs start barking... like a weird kind of bark, and they're growling while standing at the top of the stairs looking down. DH is a firefighter and won't be home tonight so I had already locked up the house. ... but to be sure I went to double check the doors. I carried the shotgun and literally turned on every light (yeah... that's how freaked I was) and double/triple checked all the locks on the doors and they were good. Now my dogs are laying in bed with me, but I keep hearing random creaks in the floor and stuff... I'm pretty sure they're normal noises, but I'm just having weird anxiety tonight and I don't like it. I'm keeping the master bathroom light on as a night light like I'm 5... this is ridiculous.

  • Don't feel bad. It happens. Multiple times I have gone thru my house and checked all closets, rooms etc.

  • Anytime my dogs do that I flip out.. My DH is home at night and he thinks I'm crazy.. But I go downstairs and make sure the chains on the door and both locks are locked and I check the patio door to make sure it's locked and my little chihuahua just follows me like he's a big ole Great Dane (it's actually pretty cute) and he saw a bug or something and went and attacked it and I absolutely flipped out and when he was done he just walked to me and was so proud of himself for protecting me from a bug.. Thanks Wall-E.. You almost made me pee myself.. Damn dog lol.. But I totally get it!!! I turn on every single light and I probably do this Atleast twice a night..
  • I get that way too. There have been times that I've stayed awake for over an hour needing to pee but was to scared to go down the steps. I'm not sure why it happens. Hopefully you sleep better tonight.
  • I was that way the other night! It's scary and my imagination seems to be working in overdrive lately. Keep that light going if it gives you peace of mind!
  • My husband is also a firefighter and travels for weeks at a time. I totally understand this feeling, especially when the dog is barking at night. We had a security system installed about a year ago and that's been really nice. We live in a super safe area but you never know. The system is called SimpliSafe and it was very easy to install. Gives me peace of mind at night! Especially when he's been gone for 3 weeks and I'm 36 weeks pregnant ;)
  • I triple check the locks every night and am definitely like that when my dogs bark for no apparent reason.

  • Yep, it happens. When my other half is out late my dogs like to go nuts barking at gremlins. I've cleared the house with the gun more times than I care to admit in the past few months.

Lol, I felt strange grabbing it to walk around but I always have the gun near the bed. I was just ultra freaked last night for some reason.

Being home alone is scary... why did I decide I wanted to be an adult? :P
  • I can 100 percent relate. My husband travels often on weekends for work and even with my two dogs, I lock my bedroom door and leave our master bathroom light on! Also, this is even more childish, but walking through the house at night turning off lights I run like a little kid as if someone or something is chasing me until I safely get into the bedroom, lock the door, and am under blankets. I'm a grown ass woman but I sure don't feel like it when I'm alone!

I was totally nervous about saying I did this!! My husband gets hot at night so I get the whole blanket and I just take one of the dogs and hide under the cover like a kid.. I'm glad I'm not the only one!!
