A DIY Reminder

For those of you thinking about trying out padsicles now is the time to make them!  I followed this "recipe" that I found on Pinterest. (Bonus - that's an awesome blog and both my SO and I really loved the "What Would Jack Bauer Do 3 part dad guest posts). It cost me maybe $15 at the most and about 30-45 minutes of my time. The only thing I did different was I used normal maxi pads, not the overnight ones. I'll probably regret getting regular pads, but that's what Amazon Prime is for if they help ;)

Pictures are before, after (almost no mess!), and a bonus picture of my poor fur children - who thought I was cooking since I was in the kitchen.

Re: A DIY Reminder

  • Ive never heard of these! Awesome!
  • Loading the player...
  • I have a load of pads from my last miscarriage , was thinking I'll buy more as I don't know when they expire but maybe I'll use then for these .

  • I like that blog too.  I found some witch hazel with aloe in it at whole foods, here's the company: https://www.thayers.com/  I used the whole bottle and it made about 12.

Thank you for the reminder. I need to get these done!

I'm also on the fence about buying Depends as I've heard it can get bloody. I was never a pad person so I thought Depends might be more comfy to sleep in.
  • I made these last week, I'm worried that when I go to get them out and use them they will just be one huge stuck together mess though, but the idea of it sounded soothing!

The Depends will be a game time decision for me. I'm just not quite ready to resign myself to that fate although I am totally willing to walk my happy ass up to the CVS (it's a five minute walk) with baby if I need them. Plus, I don't want my SO laughing at me for having them in the house beforehand. It seems like something he'd do.

If he laughs at you, tell him that you'll laugh harder when he's needing men pads.
  • @thegingeravenger you have Shibas! So cute!
  • Yes!! This is the exact ones I made, but I only made 7-8 to start with and then if need be and I find that I like them SO or me will make more. Excellent!
  • 2 questions for anyone who has used these before:
    1. Are they too cold on the lady bits?
    2. Do they sting?

I wanted to make them and was describing them to my mom and she was horrified. I said they were all over pintrest (an argument that in all fairness, does not really hold water). Thoughts?
  • I am assuming that you pretty much have to do these yourself since there's no aisle in the supermarket that says padsicles. Still terrified I'll f it up though, I couldn't even make cardboard cut out turkey hands in grade school. Wondering if a cold pack would substitute (the gel kind) in some disposable undies.
    Do unto others.

I havent used them (obviously as a ftm) but I have thought about the too cold thing too. No frostbite for the lady bits thanks. Maybe letting them thaw for just a bit would combat that if it does occur? Who knows.
But I kind of feel like with the ingredients it would sting for a second then soothe, ya know.
  • I used them with my first and trust me, you want them cold! You don't want to feel anything down there, especially if you tear. Bring on the numb vagina.

I don't need these this time, but I totally had them on my list a few weeks ago!
  • Thanks for this!
    Your pups :)<3
  • Question- how do you wear them when there is bleeding? Do they still absorb like you need them to?

Same for ice packs- how would you use that with the bleeding? Do you not bleed that long?
  • @Ceb2015 I was thinking the same thing. Maybe putting these inside of a depends so the depends will absorb some?

  • With my first 2 I only needed these the first day and part of the next. the hospital I was at had frozen diapers and had me put the tucks pads in them. You deffinetly want them cold!
  • This is an awesome idea. Deffinately going to try, thanks for sharing!
  • I saw these too on Pinterest!  I will definetly be making mine.... now that someone had to courage to make them first!
  • For those concerned about them being too cold, I'm thinking that maybe they will a) freeze as more of a fluid gel rather than ice, and resemble a cold pack for sports injuries or b) you could stick them in the fridge instead, so they'll just be chilled and not frozen? I'm a FTM as well, so I've not had first hand experience, but that's just what I'm thinking. :)
  • To add to the too cold concern as a STM... nothing will be too cold when trying to soothe your lady bits :)

You won't wear them for nearly as long as you think. My hospital made me a pack using a diaper and I only wore it for 15-20 minutes tops. If you're worried about bleeding too much, put a pad underneath, but for 15 minutes it will get the job done.
  • Woah what did I miss??? Where has @thegingeravenger gone

    Seriously?!?! Booooo :(
  • Just made mine! Thanks for the great post! My husband even helped
  • Reviving. I bought the items to make these, and it's been a good 12 years since I've bought pads. I felt like a teenage girl who just got their period standing in the aisle like "wtf how do I choose?" Anyways got the purple sack of always maxi pads and holy SHIT they are huge. They are about twice the size of the pantiliners I am currently wearing. Question for STM+, should I exchange them for smaller ones? I feel like they aren't even going to fit in my underwear.

I need to get on buying some, but I just have to say that's exactly how I feel about it. I texted my sister about how I don't even know anymore what to look for, I'm about as lost as my husband would be on what I should buy.
  • Got giant pads and aloe on Sunday, need to get some witch hazel tomorrow night and I can get a bag of these prepped!

An argument that does not really hold water: pun intended?
  • Made mine last week!! Didn't know about this idea with the first two, and an super excited to have them this go around!! I bought the huge overnight size (my husband calls them the flying mattress pads). Didn't take long to make them. Good luck ladies!
  • Just an FYI....I looked at a few different witch hazel brands. Some have alcohol in them!! I cannot imagine that will feel good so be cautious.

    Ouch...

Any Europeans out there who would know of a witch hazel brand that I could buy here? I've only found one cream to apply locally so far
