Split placenta/accessory lobe

Is anyone else experiencing this?

33wks tomorrow. The US doctor informed me of this at my last US last week. I'm struggling to find information on this and do not have another appointment until Thursday. The odds of this happening are only 16:10,000.

The US doctor is saying not to worry but as a FTM that is nervous this is very difficult. He shared that it is going to be more of a delivery concern and not a concern for the baby; however some of the information that I'm finding contradicts that.

  • Hey, didn't want to read and run.  I've never heard of this but hopefully someone on here will have some encouraging words for you.  If delivery is the concern will they just want to schedule you a c-section?   I'll be thinking of you!

  • This is not something I heard of until this morning but after doing some research, this is what I know. It happens in about 2:1000 women, basically you have an extra lobe or tube off your placenta. The biggest issue is that it may not fully detach after birth or it may interfere during delivery. You may have a heightened chance of needing a c-section or a medical procedure to fully remove your placenta after birth. It sounds like your doctor said don't worry about it because it won't be an issue/concern until labor and even then it may not be an issue. I hope this is helpful. I would add from personal experience that if your still uncomfortable or have follow up concerns that you call your doctor or bring them up at your next visit. It's your right to ask questions, and we are all our own best advocate when it comes to health issues.

I have the same thing and am honestly not concerned. My doctor said it's important to know so they make sure that it all comes out at delivery but that is all. I'm planning on having a natural birth and she also told me that there may be a chance she'll have to give me something to help get the placenta all out, just to let me know, which I said I was fine with. Don't worry about it, it'll be fine!
  • So I had a similar experience with my first baby. I had an extra lobe that had grown but because we only did a dating ultrasound it wasn't noticed. I delivered my little guy just fine at home with a midwife but had a lot of clotting in the 4 weeks postpartum. We did an ultrasound and found the extra lobe. Had a d&c to remove it and everything was fine.
  • I have this too, they noticed at my anatomy scan. They told me I'll need another u/s at 32 weeks to make sure it is still in an ok position (not on my cervix basically) and to see if it has possibly grown into my placenta. My doctors told me the biggest concern at this point is just making sure they know in the delivery room so that they can get it all out, as PP have mentioned. Try not to stress!!

  • Interestingly enough, I just delivered a baby with this kind of placenta today. Baby was a healthy 10 pounder. We didn't know it had an accessory lobe until I inspected the placenta. No problems though. It does happen somewhat regularly without incident.
  • Thank you everyone for your prayers and support. This is helpful in reducing many of my concerns and anxieties. I have another dr appointment on Thursday and another US scheduled in 2 weeks.
  • I just found out the same thing! They discovered it at my 32 week ultrasound. I was searching these boards to find out more info also. I'm relieved to know know that i'm not the only one in this boat. My Dr didn't seem too concerned. Like the previous posters he just made sure that we were all on the same page that I need to be diligent in telling the Dr in delivery that I have another "lobe" that needs to be taken out after the main placenta. Good luck to you!
