Moving the baby around yourself

My mom always talked about how she would get her hand under us and move us around while we were still in her tummy. Especially if we were sitting on a nerve or something. I've been doing this to my little one when he really get feisty (like kicking my ribs or bouncing the bladder like a trampoline) and it does help him move off problem areas... but when I told my MIL, she got all wide-eyed and freaked out a little. "I've NEVER heard of that! CAN you DO that?!?" I don't see the problem with it as it's more like gentle pushing nudges to encourage him to relocate.

Has anyone else done this? Just make sure my mom and I aren't nuts. :)

  • I do this too! Just every once in a while to get a foot out of my ribs or a fist out of my hip. I think a gentle motion should be fine - it's not like you can really grab anything.

  • Sometimes DS turns into a very hard and painful ball, I will gently rub him u til he moves. I don't see how that's any different than this obnoxious vibrating contraption they use during the NST to wake him up.

  • You should see the aggressive way that my doctor moves her when she isn't cooperative! Im sure you're fine!
  • I like to push down in my belly and feel baby push back or when baby isn't moving a lot I'll push down to get them moving again.
  • I will push right under my ribs if she gets too uncomfortable and she will move out. Or also like PP, if she seems quiet I'll massage my belly and get her to move. I'm sure we're fine doing this!
  • My doc suggested it when I get worried about his movements. My doctor even teases him a bit during appointments. Totally safe, I guess, as long as you're not knocking him around!

:) Thanks, everyone. I figured it was fine, but just curious. I never try to be forceful... the doctor and ultrasound techs are harder on him than I ever could be. Just gentle pushes to encourage him to move by himself. :)

  • Not a problem at all as long as you're not forceful! I pressed on my belly when I felt like LO was jabbing me somewhere or if she was hiccuping a lot.
  • I do this all the time, especially now that he's up in my ribs a lot. My midwife moves him more vigorously than I do, so I'm not worried about it!

  • I push on DS just to tease him and get him to push back, and it freaked out my coworker. The way I see it, I'm not pressing any harder than he would feel when I bend over, or accidentally bump belly against stuff.

  • I would not have slept a single wink for the past few months if I hadn't moved this guy around. Kicking around my ribs EVERY night as soon as I lay down, without fail. I always gently press and drag my hand over by his foot like I'm smoothing something out to coax him into reposition. And like PP's all said, the ultrasound techs are WAY more aggressive.
